The candidate filing period for three Juneau Assembly and three Juneau Board of Education seats began Friday, and is scheduled to continue until 4:30 p.m. Monday, July 28.

The incumbents for five of the six seats have indicated they plan to run again. The exception is school board president Deedie Sorensen, who a year ago said she planned to retire after six years on the board and more than 35 years as a teacher for the Juneau School District.

The three Assembly seats that all are for full-three year terms are:

• Areawide, for residents living anywhere in Juneau. Currently held by Ella Adkison, who was elected two years ago to fill the remainder of Carole Triem’s term when she stepped down to temporarily move abroad. Adkison is the first candidate to officially file in this year’s municipal election Oct. 7 since she was the only candidate at the city clerk’s office at City Hall at when it opened at 8 a.m. Friday.

• District 1, for residents in downtown Juneau, Douglas, North Douglas, Lemon Creek or the airport area. Currently held by Deputy Mayor Greg Smith, who is completing his second term.

• District 2, for residents in the Mendenhall Valley, Auke Bay or out the road. Currently held by Wade Bryson, who is completing his second term.

School board seats are decided in a single race where voters select up to three candidates from all eligible contenders (including write-ins), who may live anywhere in Juneau, and the three with the most votes get the vacant seats. On the ballot this fall are full three-year terms for Sorensen’s seat and the one held by Emil Mackey, plus the remaining two years of a seat held by Will Muldoon until he unexpectedly resigned this spring and was replaced by former board member Steve Whitney.

People interested in running for any of the three seats must file in person at City Hall at 155 Heritage Way, Room 215, according to a notice from the city clerk’s office.

"Candidates are encouraged to file as early as possible during the filing period to allow for time to correct any errors or insufficiencies in their paperwork.

Filing requirements include a declaration of candidacy with proper signatures and notarization, a nominating petition with signatures, and a copy of the Public Official Financial Disclosure form filed with the Alaska Public Offices Commission, according to the clerk’s office.

The deadline for residents to register to vote in the election, or update current information, is Sept. 7. Ballots are scheduled to be mailed to all registered voters on Friday, Sept. 19.
