September's First Friday will feature poetry readings, visual art exhibits, and a free boreal forest talk at the Alaska State Museum

Juneau Arts & Humanities Council: Christine M Kleinhenz

Opening of "Silver Salmon Cycle — from egg until spawn" by Christine M Kleinhenz. Exhibit is about silver salmon and their cycle.

Juneau Suicide Prevention Coalition / JAHC: Wall of Remembrance

350 Whittier St.

4 - 7 p.m.


An event to commemorate Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, honoring lives lost and uplifting survivors. Community members are invited to add names and messages to the Wall of Remembrance at the JAHC as a tribute to those lost to suicide.

Coppa: MK MacNaughton

917 Glacier Ave, #102

Thursday, Sept. 4, 9 -11 a.m.


MK MacNaughton shares new work from her August 2025 Residency in Snaefellsnes, Iceland. MacNaughton will be available on Thursday for coffee and questions. Work will remain up for 3 months- Sept-Nov.

Juneau-Douglas City Museum: Jonas Lamb- original poetry reading, Sarah McNair-Grove and friends- classical music; woodwind ensemble

4:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.


Local artists perform as part of the City Museum's summer exhibition, Wild Joys: Creating Community through the Performing Arts. Admission is free.


Performance line-up includes:

• Original poetry reading from Jonas Lamb

• Music by Sarah McNair-Grove and friends- classical music; woodwind ensemble

Marie Drake Planetarium: Open House - Explore the Universe

1415 Glacier Ave.

5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.


A presentation of short movies about astronomy and space exploration on the 30-ft. planetarium dome. Suitable for all ages. Astronomy questions welcome.

Alaska State Library, Archives, and Museum: Corinna Cook

395 Whittier St.

7 p.m. - 8 p.m.


Essayist Corinna Cook will give a free talk entitled “The Human Imagination Beneath the Boreal Forest" in connection with Boreal Forest Stories, a collaborative art and science exhibition currently at the Alaska State Museum. Cook is the author of Leavetakings, a lyric essay collection about northern sorrows and friendships, a former Fulbright Fellow, and a 2018 Alaska Literary Award recipient.

Hearthside Books: Jim Duncan, Author

Author and former legislator Jim Duncan will hold a signing event for his book, ''Making Sausage From Illinois Farm to a 45-Year Career in Public Service in Alaska'."

Sealaska Heritage Institute: Mark Dundore - Devil’s Club Essential Oil and Skincare Products, Renee Tl'aagunk Culp - Southeast Alaska Style Jewelry, Jes L'xook Kinville-James - Beaded Earrings

The First Friday Native Artist Market will feature demonstrating artist Gunashaa Lisa Fisher, a weaver who plans to start a Ravenstail-styled apron this year. The demonstration will take place in the Walter Soboleff building lobby.


The following artists are also featured in this month’s First Friday Event: Mark Dundore, owner of “Southeast Devil’s Club” will be displaying his pure steam-distilled devil's club essential oil and handcrafted skincare products; Renee Tl'aagunk Culp, owner of “Sugar Bear Alaskan Treasures,” will be presenting her Southeast Alaska-style jewelry including trade beads, abalone, mother of pearl with copper and silver; Jes L'xook Kinville-James will be exhibiting her beaded earrings, including some made with handmade cabochons. She also makes regalia, but it has so far only been commission-based.

Also free admission to the Nathan Jackson Gallery and Exhibit and Sealaska Heritage Arts Campus.

Harbor Mountain Brewing: Hollis Kitchin, Watercolor Artist

165 Shattuck Way

6 p.m. -  9 p.m.


Harbor Mountain Brewing will feature local watercolor artist Hollis Kitchin and a mix of her recent and past works. "Through the Fog" celebrates her love of the rain, mist, and fog that blankets Juneau throughout the year.

Aan Hít Village House: Pop-up Artist Tables

219 S. Franklin St.

4 p.m. - 7 p.m.


Browse vendor tables by artists Jayne Dangeli, Ranelle Hinchman, Chelsea Miller, Rochelle Smallwood, Darlene McKinley, and Krystle Dewitt-Narino.

JAMHI Health & Wellness Inc. & Juneau Reentry Coalition: JAMHI Lookback Mini-Doc Project Premiere

134 N. Franklin St.

4:30 p.m. - 8 p.m.


Debut public screening of the JAMHI Lookback Project mini-documentaries, highlighting the history and lasting impact of JAMHI and those who built it. Created by a dozen local filmmakers, these films will be shown alongside artwork by JAMHI and Juneau Reentry Coalition clients and staff.

Juneau Artists Gallery: Tina Halvorsen, Multimedia Artist

175 S. Franklin St.

4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.


Multimedia artist Tina Halvorson is the featured artist for the month of September at the Juneau Artists Gallery. Her new show will feature a woodburned mixed media mermaid and octopus, as well as jellyfish from upcycled materials

Kindred Post: Tiny Post Office Poetry Jam - Tripp J Crouse + Other Poets

145 S Franklin St.

4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.


Featured poetry readings from Tripp J Crouse and selected other local poets. Crouse's work has appeared in Yellow Medicine Review, Suburban Witchcraft, beestung, Mystic Owl, Red String, Genre Punk, and more. They also co-edited Plancestors, an all-Indigenous issue of plant poetry published by Alocasia, and is the author of the chapbook "For Every Dead Buffalo." The author will also have copies of their work available for purchase and signing. Mail services do not operate during special events.

Devil’s Club Brewing: Harper Joy Gunn

100 N. Franklin St.

5 p.m. - 9 p.m.


Harper Joy Gunn is an artist, musician, and designer from Seattle who now resides on Áak’w Ḵwáan Aaní. She is a self-taught artist who draws inspiration from nature and tattoo artistry using acrylics, digital, and printmaking. Her work explores iconography and elevating everyday objects and sights into a place of appreciation.

The Bear’s Lair: Gabrille Lopez - Knitted Goods with Felted Designs and Kelsey Hoke - Painter

175 S. Franklin St., Ste. 109

4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.


Kelsey Hoke will be sharing ten of her brand new acrylic originals of Juneau places in brilliant color and style, and Gabrille Lopez will be sharing her hand-knit goods with Juneau-themed felted designs. Event will also feature live music by Travis Croteau and snacks.

Juneau Makerspace: First Friday Social Dance Party

3915 N. Douglas Hwy.

7 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.


The First Friday Social Dance Party is 7-10:30 p.m. at Juneau Makerspace. All styles, all levels, and all ages welcome. No experience or partners needed. Family friendly with on-site childcare. Doors open at 7 p.m. Balboa swing lesson 7:30 PM - 8 PM. Fusion contra 8:30-9 p.m. All styles dancing until 10:30 p.m.
