The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé volleyball team finished their third day of action at the Mt. Edgecumbe High School’s Southeast Slamma Jamma Volleyball Tournament in Sitka with a consolation championship.

JDHS defeated Sitka 25-20, 25-20 for the King Salmon Division third-place game. The Crimson Bears had lost to Kenai to open Saturday’s tournament 25-19, 21-25, 15-12.

“I’m the happiest with the fact that they continued to improve their play over the course of the weekend,” JDHS coach Jody Levernier said. “The girls worked really hard at changing things on the court that we asked them to work on. Kenai came out strong in the first match against them (our first set of games). We lost both- then we saw them in bracket play and went three (it was best of 3) very close sets with them. The girls adjusted and worked well together.”

Kenai won the tournament over Nikiski 13-25, 25-22, 15-6. Nikiski had defeated Sitka to open Saturday’s play 25-20, 23-25, 15-10.

Levernier said the Crimson Bears made notable improvements in the tournament.

“Staying home on defense was key,” she said. “They like to cheat to the middle of the court and then we get burned on long attacks. We also improved on hitting instead of tipping when the game is close, being confident in our skills, attacking and being smart and aggressive.”

Mt. Edgecumbe won the Coho Division championship over Ketchikan 13-25, 25-21, 15-13. MEHS had beaten Bethel 25-18, 25-8 to reach the title match and Kayhi had defeated Kotzebue 25-22, 14-25, 15-13.
