What a difference a year makes

A year ago, it seemed like a done deal that Telephone Hill would be razed and magically transform into 150 condos. The Assembly’s plan to create an affordable housing mecca in downtown Juneau on 4.2 acres of available land is magical thinking. There are actually not 4.2 acres available, but only 1.4 acres. The treed embankments and other non-buildable areas were added in. There are myriad reasons the city’s plan for concrete condos will not work. This is just one.
A group of us have relentlessly lobbied the Assembly to save the beautiful historic houses and green space. Due to us and a massive public outcry, the demolition of Telephone Hill is now on hold.
A developer wants to buy it and restore the houses. We have a lawsuit happening. Construction costs keep rising. The city has started to see the value of history and beauty to the well-being of Juneau. These are some reasons we believe we will save Telephone Hill.
A block party and ice cream social is set for Telephone Hill on Sunday, July 5, between 1 and 3 p.m. The event is family and kid friendly, with popsicles or ice cream cones for all. The highlight of a program of speakers will be former resident Mark Whitman’s presentation of historical stories. The party will happen rain or shine.
