A snowstorm that arrived Sunday is expected to leave up to eight inches total accumulation, with a winter storm warning in effect until noon Monday, according to the National Weather Service Juneau.
An initial warning issued at about 10 p.m. Sunday night called for four to six inches of snow, but that was increased in an update at about 5:30 a.m. Monday.
"While the forecast remains on track for much of SE AK, snow has accumulated a bit faster than previously anticipated for the Juneau area, with 4 inches having already fallen for many locations," the update notes. "An additional 1 to 4 inches of snow is expected before a changeover to rain occurs, with the greatest totals expected for the Mendenhall Valley northward; while Downtown and Douglas will experience a quicker changeover to rain, lowering additional snowfall amounts."
Juneau School District buses are operating on snow routes Monday, according to an announcement by Kristin Bartlett, the district’s chief of staff.
No notices of closures were issued by 7:15 a.m. by the City and Borough of Juneau, or the State of Alaska.
The long-term forecast calls for snow turning to rain by Monday night, with rain continuing through at least Sunday.
