Auke Bay Post 25 begins final home series with win

Juneau scores 12 runs, gives up two, in defeat of visiting East Post 34 on Friday

Juneau’s Auke Bay Post 25 American Legion baseball team began a four-game home stand against visiting East Post 34 on Friday at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park with a 12-2 win behind strong pitching and hitting performances.


Marcus Mendoza brought the starting heat on the mound for Auke Bay, Cayman Huff put a slow curve and knuckleball over the plate for 3.1 innings and Parker Katasse closed out the game.


Mendoza threw 1.2 innings, allowed two hits and one run, walked one batter and struck out two. Huff allowed four hits and struck out two. Katasse allowed one hit, one run and walked two.


Among those innings Micah Nelson went 3-4 at the plate, with three runs batted in and one run scored. He also earned one walk.


Juneau gave up an opening run as East’s Freddy Reyes earned a walk, advanced on a double by Yeralvin Ramirez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sage Garsha.

Juneau scored twice in the bottom of the second and never looked back. Jacob Katasse earned a one-out walk, Brenner Harralston a two-out walk and Katasse scored on a catcher’s error to tie the game at 1-1. Nelson singled to right field scoring Harralston for the 2-1 lead.


Harralston earned another walk in the bottom of the fourth innings, advanced on a two-out hit by Hunter Carte and scored on a passed ball for 3-1.


Juneau put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning as Bode Winkelman walked, Drew Cadigan-McAdoo walked, J. Katasse singled to left field scoring Winkelman, Noah Lewis walked scoring Cadigan-McAdoo, Nelson walked scoring J. Katasse, Lewis scored on a passed ball, Carte walked, Harralston scored on a wild pitch and Carte scored on a passed ball for a 10-1 lead.


East added their final run in the top of the sixth inning as Jonathan Greenway earned a walk, stole second and scored on a single by Reed Wirschem to trail 10-2.


Juneau added their final runs in the bottom half of the sixth as Lewis and Harralston walked, Parker Katasse singled to score Lewis and Carte singled to score Harralston for 12-2.


Nate Fick, Carte, Cadigan-McAdoo and J. Katasse had one hit each. Carte, J. Katasse and Harralston had one RBI each. Harralston scored four runs, J. Katasse and Lewis two apiece, Cadigan-McAdoo, Bode Winkelman and Carte one each. Harralston earned four walks, Lewis, Cadigan-McAdoo, Winkelman and Carte two each, N. Fick and J. Katasse one apiece.


Yeralvin Ramirez had three hits to lead East and Sage Garsha two. Dylan Dumas took the loss (4.1 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 7 BB, 2 SO), Reed Wirschem (0.1 IP, 3 R, 4 BB, 1 SO) and Jayson Greenway (0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 4 BB).

Auke Bay plays East Saturday at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.


Auke Bay ends the regular season on the road with league games against Dimond (Thursday, July 16), Wasilla (Friday, July 17), Kenai (Saturday, July 18) and a non-league game in Anchorage against Ketchikan (Sunday, July 19).


The top eight teams of the 14-team AA standings advance to the Alaska Legion Baseball AA 74th State Tournament at Anchorage’s Mulcahy Stadium, July 25-30. The AA All-Star game is July 31 at Mulcahy. The winner of the state tournament advances to play in the Northwest Regional at Medford, Oregon on August 5-9. The NWR winner advances to the Legion World Series at Shelby, North Carolina, August 13-18.
