Hunter Carte throws no-hitter with solid fielding and big bats by teammates

Juneau’s Auke Bay Post 25 American Legion baseball team swept visiting East Post 34 in a Saturday doubleheader at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park, winning 9-5 behind three hits from Hunter Carte and 10-0 in the nightcap with Carte pitching a no-hitter.


In the opener, Auke Bay gave up five runs in the first inning including a grand slam by East’s Wally Sherwood. But the Juneau boys got two runs back in the bottom of the inning and added five more in the second inning and two in the third inning while holding East scoreless the rest of the game.


Carte led the Auke Bay bats with three hits, two runs batted in and one run scored. Madden Mendoza (2 R) and Jacob Katasse (2 R, 1 walk) had two hits apiece; Micah Nelson (2 R, 2 walks), Noah Lewis (1 R, 1 RBI), Nate Fick (1 RBI) and Bode Winkelman (1 RBI) one hit each. Keaton Belcourt scored one run and had one walk.

Nelson started on the bump, going two innings, allowing two hits and five runs and walking five batters. Marcus Mendoza relieved (5 IP, 4 H, 2 strikeouts).


Sherwood led East with the four RBI on one hit. Edgar Pozo led with two hits. Yeralvin Ramirez, Sage Garsha, Chase Dumas, Dylan Dumas and Sherwood scored one run each.


In the nightcap Carte was masterful in the complete-game win. He faced 25 batters and threw 105 pitches with 60 strikes and had a solid defense behind him.


Carte fielded a ground ball in the bottom of the first inning to start a double play to shortstop Madden Mendoza covering second who threw on to first baseman Drew Cadigan-McAdoo. Madden Mendoza fielded a ground ball in the bottom of the sixth inning to start another double play, throwing on to Nelson at second base who moved the ball on to Cadigan-McAdoo.


Madden Mendoza handled four ground balls for outs, Nelson three and Carte one.

Cadigan-McAdoo had seven putouts at first base, Carte struck out seven including the final out of the game. Lewis had two putouts in center field, Mendoza two at third base and Nelson one at second base.


Fick led Auke Bay with two hits (3 RBI, 1 BB).  Nelson (2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Katasse (1 R, 2 BB) and Cadigan-McAdoo (1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) had one hit each. Carte (1 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB), Madden Mendoza (1 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB), Ayden Bergmann (1 R), Marcus Mendoza (1 RBI), Lewis (1 R, 2 BB) and Brenner Harralston (1 R, 1 BB) all reached base. Nelson had two stolen bases, Bergmann, Harralston, Cadigan-McAdoo, Carte, Lewis and Zev LeVine one each.


East’s Garsha took the loss (1.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 2 SO), Freddy Reyes relieved (3.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 SO), Sherwood (3 R, 4 BB, 1 SO) and Owen Butcher (2 R, 2 BB) went one inning apiece.


Auke Bay Post 25 moved into first place in the Alaska Legion AA standings with a 10-2 league record and are 12-3 overall. They defeated East 12-2 on Friday and play them again in a non-league game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
