With another winter storm approaching, the City and Borough of Juneau is encouraging residents to include fire hydrants and storm drains on their snow clearing lists. Up to 19 inches of additional snow accumulation is possible this week.

“Fire crews rely on immediate access to hydrants to respond quickly to fires and medical emergencies. Keeping hydrants accessible is a simple step that helps protect your neighbors, your property, and the safety of first responders during this extreme winter weather,” a Dec. 29 information release states.

It’s advised that people avoid blocking hydrants with vehicles or snow piles and shovel a three- foot radius around them to allow easy access in case of emergency. Fire hydrant locations are available on the Juneau Fire Hydrant and Street Atlas

CBJ is also recommending residents remove the snow or ice blocking storm drains on their street to allow drainage and prevent minor flood events when the precipitation turns to rain.

“While CBJ Streets crews are working to clear fire hydrants, storm drains, and CBJ roads as quickly as possible, resident support is greatly appreciated,” the release states.
