The Juneau Recycling Center is closed indefinitely due to critical equipment needing repairs, with parts expected to arrive next week, the City and Borough of Juneau announced Tuesday.
The center has been closed repeatedly since a series of storms began in late December that resulted in the closure of all city facilities. The recycling center reopened on Jan. 17, but then again closed some days and operated limited hours on others, with a Jan. 21 notice on CBJ’s official Facebook page that "after collecting lots of material from the community this weekend, the team needs time to handle mechanical issues and make space for more."
On Jan. 23 another notice stated Waste Management Inc., which operates the recycling center under contract with CBJ, "is experiencing challenges."
"We need more time to fix the baler and clear out all the materials from this month’s winter storm," the notice stated, adding the center would be closed the next day and officials were "hopeful repairs will be completed early next week."
However, a press release issued Tuesday is pushing that timeline further out.
"The Recycling Center, operated by CBJ contractor WM, is closed indefinitely for repairs to critical equipment," the release states, adding "as of Tuesday, January 27, staff are awaiting parts set to arrive next week."
CBJ states it will provide daily updates on the situation at juneaurecycling.com.
