Update: Woman dies from injuries sustained after single-vehicle collision out North Douglas

An 89-year-old woman has died as a result of injuries sustained in a crash in the 4300 block of North Douglas Highway that occurred Wednesday afternoon, according to the Juneau Police Department.

JPD's preliminary investigation determined that a sport utility vehicle was traveling outbound on North Douglas Highway when it left the roadway, entered a ditch and struck a tree. The vehicle was occupied by a female driver, 62, and a female passenger, 89, according to a JPD press release.

Officers, along with personnel from Capital City Fire/Rescue, provided emergency assistance at the scene.

CCFR Engine 11, Medic 1, Medic 3 and Response Chief responded by using a low-angle rope rescue technique to hoist one victim out with a Stokes basket. Fire Chief Tom Hatley said the other victim was able to walk and climb up a ladder over the embankment with assistance.

Both occupants were transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital for treatment of injuries. On Thursday, the 89-year-old female passenger died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.
