Crimson Bears boys complete sweep of Kings

JDHS tops Ketchikan 11-5 and 9-6 on Wednesday

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé baseball team defeated visiting Ketchikan 11-5 and 9-6 at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park field on Wednesday, completing a two-day, three-game sweep of their Southeast Conference rivals. The Crimson Bears nipped the Kings 4-3 on Tuesday.


JDHS junior Hunter Carte went 2-3 from the plate in Wednesday’s opener, with three runs batted in. He scored two runs and earned one walk. Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning Carte hit a ground ball that scored senior Marcus Mendoza to tie the game at 5-5.


JDHS senior Riley Fick had four RBI, three of which came in the bottom of the sixth inning to finish a six-run rally that decided the game. The inning started with a one-out walk earned by sophomore Charlie Begenyi and a single by senior Madden Mendoza, who was replaced on base by junior pinch runner Kordell Lim. Senior Tyler Kookesh grounded out to first base, advancing the runners. Begenyi scored on a passed ball and senior Nate Fick singled in Lim for a 7-5 lead. Marcus Mendoza walked, Carte singled and R. Fick hit a double that cleared the bases for a 10-5 lead. Senior Chris Andersen singled to score R. Fick for the 11-5 tally.


In the top of the seventh Kayhi had a single, a fly ball out to Kookesh in center, another single, and another fly ball out to right fielder Begenyi. The game ending out came via strikeout from Andersen on the mound.

Begenyi started on the mound, went four innings, allowed seven hits and five runs, walked three and struck out one. Andersen relieved for three innings, allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one.


Kookesh had five putouts in center field, R. Fick five at third base, Carte four in left field, Nelson four at second base and Begenyi one in right field.


Madden Mendoza had three fielding plays, N. Fick and Nelson two apiece, Andersen and freshman catcher Bode Winkleman one apiece.


N. Fick and Andersen added one RBI apiece. Andersen had two hits, Madden Mendoza, N. Fick and R. Fick one each. Begenyi, N. Fick, Andersen and Marcus Mendoza added two runs each, Lim, Kookesh and R. Fick one each. Begenyi earned three walks, Madden Mendoza two, Nelson, Kookesh, N. Fick and Marcus Mendoza one each.


Kayhi’s Ace Asper, Owen Mendoza, Charles Kroscavage and Bryant Marquez had two hits each and Asper had two RBI. Ayden Manabat (2.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 6 BB, 2 SO), Wyatt Balluta (2.1 IP, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO), Kroscavage (0.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 3 BB) and Cash Larson (0.1 IP, 1 SO) threw for the Kings.

JDHS also rallied late for the win in game two. Trailing 6-3 the Crimson Bears scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Nelson earned a one-out walk, Begenyi singled and Madden Mendoza doubled both across the plate to trail 6-5.


Pinch runner Lim came in for Mendoza, N. Fick earned a walk and Kookesh singled to score Lim to tie the game 6-6. Junior Drew Cadigan-McAdoo doubled to score N. Fick and Kookesh scored on a passed ball. Carte walked and Marcus Mendoza singled to right field scoring Cadigan-McAdoo for 9-6.


The JDHS defense held through the final two innings with freshman closer Parker Katasse taking the mound in the top of the sixth inning (1 BB, 1 SO) and senior closer Marcus Mendoza in the top of the seventh (1 SO). Senior Cayman Huff started the game (3 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 BB, 1 SO) and freshman Isaac Kirsch relieved (2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 SO).


Unofficial stats show Marcus Mendoza also recorded seven putouts, N. Fick and Nelson three apiece, Begenyi two, Kookesh, Carte and Madden Mendoza one each.


Madden Mendoza led JDHS with two RBI, Kookesh, Cadigan-McAdoo, Carte and Marcus Mendoza one each. Begenyi had two hits, Madden Mendoza, N. Fick, Kookesh, Cadigan-McAdoo, Carte and Marcus Mendoza one each. Nelson earned three walks, N. Fick two and Carte one. Nelson, Begenyi and N. Fick scored two runs each, Lim, Kookesh and Cadigan-McAdoo one each.


Zyrus Manabat led Kayhi with two RBI, O. Mendoza and A. Manabat led with two hits apiece. O. Mendoza, Marquez, Jonas Simpson, A. Manabat, Z. Manabat and Julian Paule scored one run each.


JDHS improves to 8-1 overall and 5-1 in the Southeast Conference. Ketchikan is now 2-9 overall and 2-4 SEC. The Sitka Wolves are 5-6-1 overall and 2-4 in the SEC.


The Crimson Bears host the Wolves on Friday at 6 p.m. (JV 1:30 and 3:45), and Saturday at 12:30 and 3 p.m. (JV 10:15 a.m.). JDHS will celebrate its senior players at 2:30 p.m. Saturday between varsity games.
