The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears boys basketball team opened their Southeast Conference road trip at Ketchikan with a 56-45 win over the Kings.

JDHS coach Robert Casperson noted that spacing on offense and constant defensive pressure allowed the Crimson Bears to take a 12-point lead in the first half.

JDHS led 15-13 after the first quarter and outscored Kayhi 15-5 in the second stanza behind four shots past the arc by senior Kurt Kuppert. Crimson Bears junior Logan Carriker was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line in the first half.

“In the third quarter Ketchikan made the most of some of our offensive miscues and erased the deficit,” Casperson said. “I thought our senior presence and leadership kept us calm, and we were able to right the ship. From there, we focused on getting the ball inside to Elias, which helped a lot down the stretch.”

Ketchikan outscored JDHS 16-10 in the third quarter to pull within five points, 40-35, but JDHS senior Elias Dybdahl scored nine points in the fourth quarter to secure the key inside.

Dybdahl led the Crimson Bears with 21 points, Kuppert added 17, Carriker 10, Gasga three, seniors Brandon Casperson and Christian Rielly two apiece, and sophomore Micah Nelson one. JDHS hit 14-16 at the free-throw line.

Ketchikan sophomore Anthony Talango led the Kings with 13 points, senior Jozaiah Dela Cruz 11, senior Edward Dela Cruz nine, junior Henry Vail six, sophomore Rylan Hanchey five and junior Zyrus Manabat one. Kayhi hit 4-15 at the line.
