The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears soccer teams entered the second game of their three-day road trip with a lot at stake.
The Crimson Bears girls sat at the top of the Railbelt Conference, had qualified for state with an RPI number that placed them as a number two seed. Needing a win to clinch the conference title and keep building momentum for the state tournament, they toppled conference foe Wasilla 2-0 on Friday at the Warriors' home pitch.
“Just happy for the kids,” JDHS coach Matt Dusenberry said. “One of their goals was to qualify for state, and they did that last week, another goal was to win the conference, and they did that today. It’s rare that I sit during a game when I coach, and it was fun to actually sit back for a good bit and just watch them figure out today’s game themselves.”
JDHS senior Peyton Wheeler scored both goals and freshman Maddie Dale assisted on both. Dale was chosen as the team’s Hard Hat winner for the match. Wheeler and sophomore Ayla Erickson had three shots apiece, Dale and sophomore Zoe Tagsip two shots apiece and senior Kenzie Simonson one.
The Crimson Bears girls improve to 6-1 in the RBC (10-2 overall) and have guaranteed themselves the top state seed from the conference. The Warriors fall to 4-2-1 in the RBC (10-4-2 overall), with West Valley at 4-3-1 (4-4-1 overall) and Colony at 4-4 (8-5 overall). Lathrop is in last place at 0-8 (0-9 overall). The top three teams advance to state, along with the top four from the Cook Inlet Conference and one at-large selection.
The JDHS boys were in third place in the RBC, a half game over the Warriors, but the 2-1 loss drops the Crimson Bears into fourth place, and Wasilla moves up to the third automatic qualifying spot. Game stats were not available at the time of this posting.
The JDHS boys fall to 2-5 in the RBC (5-5-1 overall) and are in a “win-and-in” situation on Saturday when they get a rematch against the Warriors, who now are 2-4-1 in the RBC (5-8-2 overall).
West Valley leads the boys’ RBC with an 8-0 record (9-1 overall), Colony is second at 5-2-1 (9-3-1 overall), with Wasilla third, JDHS fourth and Lathrop last at 1-7 (2-7 overall).
The Crimson Bears girls and boys will face the Warriors again Saturday.
The Crimson Bears began their road trip with the girls defeating the Northern Lights Conference Palmer Moose 3-0 and the Crimson Bears boys stopping the Moose 3-2.
