Crimson Bears softball girls fall to Sitka at home

JDHS baseball completes road trip sweep, soccer teams earn road wins, track soars

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé softball team lost to the visiting Southeast Conference rivals, the Sitka Wolves, for the second time in as many days, falling 12-9 on Friday at Adair Kennedy Memorial Park.


JDHS had a chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning as junior Lily Hayes led off with a walk and junior June Troxel reached on an error, but the Sitka defense held. Sitka senior pitcher Alina Lebahn fielded a ground ball hit by JDHS sophomore Ari Ma’ake and played the out at third base. A passed ball put JDHS runner Troxel on third and Ma’ake on second. JDHS junior Cassie Chenoweth blasted a line drive that should have gone down the line, but Sitka freshman third baseman Kensie Phippen snared the ball for an out and stepped on her bag for a double play.


JDHS scored the games first runs in the bottom of the second inning as Senior Alayna Echiverri reached base on an error and junior Sadie Lockhart reached on a dropped third strike by Sitka. Echiverri scored on a ground ball out by Junior Taylor Williams and Lockhart scored on a ground ball hit by Hayes to lead 2-0.


Sitka scored two runs in the top of the second to tie the game and then took a 3-2 lead in the third inning. JDHS regained the lead in the bottom half as Echiverri reached on another error and scored on a Lockhart ground ball to tie the game. Senior Gwen Nizich tripled to score Lockhart for a 4-3 lead. Williams hit a sacrifice fly to score Nizich for the 5-3 advantage.


Sitka scored a run in each of the next two inning to tie the game and added five more in the top of the sixth for a 10-5 lead.


JDHS cut into the Sitka lead with four runs in the bottom half. With two outs Chenoweth earned a walk and was replaced by senior courtesy runner Reegan Hansen. Freshman Maisey Mar reached on a dropped third strike, Echiverri walked, Lockhart singled, scoring Hansen and Mar, and Nizich doubled to score Echiverri and Lockhart and trail 10-9.


Sitka freshman Payton Bergman earned a two-out walk in the top of the seventh inning, junior Penelope Blankenship reached on an error and both Wolves’ runners would score on subsequent throwing errors for the 12-9 tally.


Nizich led the JDHS bats, going 2-4 (3 RBI, 1 R), Lockhart 1-4 (2 RBI, 3 R, 1 SO), Echiverri 1-3 (3 R, 1 BB), Williams 0-2 (2 RBI, 1 BB), Hayes 0-3 (1 BB, 1 SO), Troxel 0-3 (1 SO), Mar 0-1 (1 R, 1 SO), Chenoweth 0-2 (2 BB, 1 SO), Wheeler 0-2 (2 SO), Ma’ake 0-3 (1 BB), and freshman Blythe Lockhart 0-1.


Wheeler pitched five innings (4 H, 5 R, 2 BB, 3 SO) and Mar two (6 H, 7 R, 2 BB). Sitka’s Lebahn pitched seven innings (4 H, 9 R, 6 BB, 7 SO).


Sitka’s Lebahn went 1-4 (3 RBI, 1 R), Phippen went 3-4 (1 RBI, 1 R), freshman Emery Carley 3-4 (1 RBI, 2 R), Mayville 3-4 (2 R), Bergman 1-2 (1 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB), Blankenship 1-5 (2 R), Thea Schumejda 1-1 (1 RBI), freshman Taylor McCarty 1-2 (1 RBI, 1 BBsenior Sadie Saline 0-4 (1 R, 3 SO) and junior Vada West 0-3 (1 RBI, 1 BB)


Sitka improves 4-0 in the SEC and 8-3 overall. JDHS is 2-2 in conference and 3-3 overall. Ketchikan is 0-4 in conference play and 4-11 overall.

JDHS BASEBALL


The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé baseball team completed a three-day road trip with their third win in a row, defeating the Wasilla Warriors 17-5 on Friday behind 10 hits and 12 runs batted in.


Senior starting pitcher Cayman Huff and senior reliever Riley Fick combined for five innings of work. Huff went three innings, allowed six hits and two runs, and struck out one batter. Fick finished the night allowing one hit and three runs, walked three batters and struck out two.


Senior Tyler Kookesh went 3-4 at the plate, with three RBI and two runs scored. Senior Marcus Mendoza was 2-2 (2 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB), junior Drew Cadigan-McAdoo 1-3 (2 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SO), senior Madden Mendoza 1-3 (1 RBI, 2 R, 1 BB), Fick 2-2 (1 RBI, 1 R, 2 BB), senior Chris Andersen 1-3 (1 RBI, 1 R), junior Hunter Carte 0-2 (2 R, 2 BB, 1 SO), sophomore Charlie Begenyi 0-3 (2 R, 2 BB, 3 SO) and sophomore Micah Nelson 0-4 (2 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB).


Kookesh homered in the first inning, scoring two runs as Begenyi had earned a walk. Marcus Mendoza doubled and scored on a ground ball by Cadigan-McAdoo that was mishandled. JDHS added seven runs in the second inning and the momentum carried through the JDHS bats as they crossed the plate in each inning.


Wasilla used four pitchers that gave up a combined 10 hits, 10 walks and struck out five batters. Wasilla’s Teagan Riley led with two RBI and Brice Kennedy had two hits.


JDHS improves to 5-1 overall (2-1 Southeast Conference) and Wasilla is 5-2 overall (1-0 Rail Belt Conference).

SOCCER SCORES


The JDHS varsity girls underclassmen played a non-conference friendly match against the West Valley junior varsity at West Valley. Crimson Bears freshman Hailey Romero scored a goal, assisted by freshman Maya Mothershead and freshman Mia Alexander scored unassisted. Alexander was awarded the team’s Hard Hat for her play. Complete stats were not available and will be updated.


The JDHS boys varsity played their third game north, defeating the North Pole Patriots 2-0 on Friday. Crimson Bears sophomore Bryce Haygood was credited with one goal. Complete stats were not available and will be updated. Haygood earned 82 minutes on the pitch, senior Jesper Bennetsen 75, junior Sam Mazon and sophomore Troy Edgar 70 apiece, freshman Imanol Vera 65, seniors Elliot Welch, Noah Ault and Ethan Van Kirk, junior Ibrahima Diouffreshman and freshman Elijah Edgar 60 each, senior Kevin Flores-Lopes 55, senior Erik Thompson 30, freshman Andrew Koverdan 28 and senior Kaiden Odenheimer 25.


TRACK AND FIELD


The Sitka Invitational started on Friday with distance races and field events finalized.


Sitka junior Derek Wilson won the boys 800 and 3,200-meter races in 2:14.3 and 10:33. 5, respectively. Ketchikan senior Carter Phillips was second in the 800 with 2:14.5 and JDHS sophomore Anderson Murray third with 2:19.1. Sitka junior Zach Martins was second in the 3200 with 10:58.8 and JDHS junior Zacheriah Bos third in 11:01.6.


Sitka freshman Lola Hitchcock won the girls 800 in 2:49 with senior teammate Marina Marley second in 2:50 and Ketchikan junior Sarah Kleeman third in 2:55. Marley won the 3,200 in 13:05.3, Hitchcock was second in 13:14.2 and freshman teammate Noah Schmidt third in 13:42.6. JDHS freshman Dezerae Bos placed fifth in 14:22.8.


Ketchikan senior Jack Dunn won the boys shot put in 42 feet 4.25 inches with Sitka senior Shane Tincher second in 39 feet 0.25 inches. JDHS sophomore Heleman AitaotoTelea was fourth with 35 feet 11.25 inches. Sitka sophomore Kailee Brady won the girls shot put in 27 feet 10 inches.


Ketchikan sophomore Anthony Talaugea won the boys high jump with 5’6. JDHS freshman Vince Nizich placed fourth with 5’2. Ketchikan freshman Josie Jackson won the girls high jump with 3’10.


Sitka seniors swept the girls long jump with Jadelynn Kubik going 13’11.5, Natalie Hall 13’9.5 and Taylor Cushing 12’6. Sitka freshman Zander Sudnikovich-Remington won the boys long jump with 19’6 and Sitka seniors Cole McLaughlin and Zander Dumag placed second and third in 19’4.5 and 18’2.5, respectively.
