JDHS wins baseball doubleheader 9-7 and 15-8

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears baseball team watched a 6-2 lead turn into a 6-6 tie, but held off the Sitka Wolves for a 9-7 win in the first of a two-game road series Friday on the host’s Moller Field.
JDHS senior Marcus Mendoza started on the bump and went three innings, allowed three hits and two runs, walked three batters and struck out two. Sophomore Micah Nelson went four innings, allowed four hits and five runs, and struck out one batter.
Nelson had a strong showing at the plate, going 3-4 with one run batted in and three runs scored. Senior Tyler Kookesh was 2-4 (2 R), senior Nate Fick 2-4 (2 RBI, 1 R) and junior Hunter Carte 1-3 (2 RBI, 1 R). Senior Madden Mendoza and Marcus Mendoza had one RBI and one run apiece. Marcus Mendoza earned two walks, sophomore Charlie Begenyi, Nelson, Madden Mendoza, Carte and junior Drew Cadigan-McAdoo had one walk each.
Sitka pitched Jude Gluth for 3.1 innings (5 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 3 SO), Cooper Wyman (2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB), Brian Campbell (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB) and Josh McAlpin (0.1 IP).
Wolves senior Brett Ross went 2-3 (3 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB) and Gluth 2-4 (1 RBI, 2 R) to lead Sitka bats.
In the seven-inning nightcap, JDHS put up four runs in the first inning. Sitka worked back to trail 5-4 after three innings and 8-7 after five innings before the Crimson Bears' bats exploded for six runs and held off the Wolves for a 15-8 win.
Carte started on the bump and went three innings, allowed six hits and four runs, walked six batters and struck out two. Senior Riley Fick relieved (1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 SO) and Cadigan-McAdoo closed (2.2 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 SO).
Begenyi went 2-4 (1 RBI, 3 R, 2 BB), N. Fick 2-4 (3 R, 1 BB) and Kookesh 1-5 (3 RBI, 1 R) to lead JDHS bats. Nelson earned three walks to tally two RBI and two runs scored. Madden Mendoza and senior Chris Andersen had two RBI apiece, R. Fick and freshman Bode Winkleman one apiece. Winkleman and Anderson had one hit apiece. Cadigan-McAdoo, Winkleman, Marcus Mendoza and R. Fick scored one run apiece.
Sitka freshman Chase Haskins went 2-3 with three RBI and one run scored to lead the Wolves. Junior Josh Partido went 2-2 (3 R, 2 BB). Ross, McAlpin, freshman Fisher Steinson and sophomore Olen Weathers had two hits each.
Sitka started Ross (3 IP, 1 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 4 SO), went to Wyman (1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 SO), then freshman Nolan Calhoun (1.1 IP, 2 H, 6 R, 3 BB), then freshman Fisher Steinson (1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 SO) and Weathers (0.1 IP, 1 BB, 1 SO).
