The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé and Ketchikan softball teams put up a season’s worth of runs in one game as the Crimson Bears toppled the visiting Kayhi Lady Kings 24-23 on Friday, May 22, at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park field.

One of many key plays in the game occurred in the top of the second inning as Ketchikan put their first two runners on base. JDHS junior Brynn Wheeler struck outa Kayhi batter for one out and the next batter popped a foul ball up behind home plate. It was eaten up by junior catcher Cassie Chenoweth who then rocketed a throw to senior center fielder Alayna Echiverri covering the bag for a double play.

At one point Ketchikan led 16-5 in the third inning, but JDHS scored five runs in the bottom half and six in each of the next two innings for a 22-17 lead.

Ketchikan scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning to close to 22-20, but JDHS answered with a pair of runs for a 24-20 lead.

Kayhi had a chance in the top of the seventh inning with a lead-off triple by junior Brianna Gilson who scored on a fielder’s choice by JDHS first baseman Wheeler.

Two walks were a threat, but Chenoweth fielded a touch in front of the plate and threw out the batter running to first for two outs. A run would score on a wild pitch, but JDHS freshman second baseman Blythe Lockhart fielded a ground ball and threw to Wheeler at first to save the game and earn the win.

Wheeler pitched 2.1 innings, allowed seven hits and 13 runs, walked eight batters and struck out two. Senior Gwen Nizich relieved (4.2 IP, 3 H, 10 R, 12 BB, 4 S).

Ketchikan senior Willow Vierra-Sonnenschein took the loss (6 IP, 22 H, 24 R, 6 BB, 2 SO).

JDHS’ Nizich went 4-6 at the plate with five runs batted in. Senior Taylor Williams, sophomore Ari Ma’ake and B. Lockhart had three hits each, Echiverri, sophomore Sadie Lockhart and sophomore Kiki Galletes-Swofford two each, and juniors Lily Hayes, June Troxel and Keira Payne one each.

JDHS’ Echiverri, S. Lockhart and B. Lockhart led with four runs scored each. S. Lockhart added four RBI and Hayes three.

Kayhi sophomore Cereniti Buendia led the Lady Kings with three hits and three RBI. Freshmen Ashlyn Hanchey and Ashlyn Harold led with four runs scored apiece. Gilson, sophomore Peyton Nickich, Harold and freshman Aleigha Currall had two RBI each.

The two teams will play at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.

JDHS will honor the Crimson Bears softball seniors at 3 p.m. between games.
