Election deadlines: Local write-in candidates on Tuesday, voter registration for statewide races Sunday

In-person voting for Oct. 6 municipal election underway, ballots can still be requested; Mendenhall Mall annex will be open for Nov. 3 state election registrations this weekend

There’s still time to be a candidate in the Oct. 6 municipal election and register to vote in the Nov. 3 statewide election, but it’s running out fast.

The deadline to file as a write-in candidate for Juneau Assembly or the Juneau Board of Education is Tuesday, according to the city clerk’s office. It’s also the last day to apply to have a ballot sent to a different address, although eligible voters have until next Monday to apply to receive a ballot by email or fax.

While write-in candidates have had some success in Juneau — most recently with Will Muldoon winning a school board seat in 2021 — this year’s voting process is already well underway.

Municipal election ballots were mailed to eligible residents on Sept. 18, with public drop boxes also opening at several locations that day. In-person early voting at City Hall and the Mendenhall Valley Public Library began Sept. 21 and will continue through Oct. 5, with regular balloting at additional locations on Election Day.

The deadline to register to vote in the statewide election — with races for governor, U.S. House, U.S. House and 50 of the 60 seats in the Alaska Legislature — is Sunday, Oct. 4, according to the Alaska Division of Elections. The Regional Election Office in Juneau, at the Mendenhall Mall annex, is scheduled to be open for voter registration from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

The deadline to receive absentee by-mail ballot applications is Oct. 24 and absentee electronic transmission applications is 5 p.m. Nov. 2.

Early in-person voting for the state election begins Oct. 19.
