Glacier Swim Club tops Savannah Cayce Southeast championships

GSC floods the pool with wins and fun in meet honoring one of their own

Juneau’s Glacier Swim Club won the team title as the three-day Savannah Cayce Southeast Alaska Regional Championships ended Sunday at Juneau’s Dimond Park Aquatic Center. Four GSC swimmers topped the age group points podium and others swam personal best times, state age-group times or just had lots of fun.
“It was just fun to get to see all the people around me again,” said GSC’s Cora Soboleff, 14. “You don’t get too many opportunities because the high school season takes up the time when you would normally travel with the club. So it is really fun seeing the club swimmers and getting to cheer each other on during each event. And if someone needs support, then you can just support each other.”
GSC scored a combined 1,820.50 points across their girls’ and boys’ rosters, with Petersburg’s Viking Swim Club second at 1,027 and Sitka’s Baranof Barracudas Swim Club third at 642 for the team podium finishes. The Ketchikan Killer Whales finished fourth with 572.50, Haines Dolphins Swim Team had 138, Craig Waverunners Swim Club 87, the GSC Masters 52 and unattached swimmers scored 50.
“It means a chance to compete against kids from Southeast, which I really enjoy doing,” said GSC’s Bailey Fisher, 17. “Getting to see people from high school season again. I really like getting to see them again and just compete with them. The highlight for me was definitely our relays. Our relays did really well.”
The Southeast Championships were renamed in honor of assistant coach Seth Cayce’s sister, Savannah, in 2013. She died on June 25, 2012, at age 16 in a jet ski accident while tubing on Auke Lake. She was a GSC swimmer from the age of five, became a varsity member of the Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé swim team as a freshman and was class president.
“Because it is in honor of Savannah, I feel like it touches our coach’s heart,” Soboleff said. “And it really remembers who she is. It brings our team closer in a way because it is a bond over someone who was on our team and I feel like it is important to keep it going.”
Added Fisher, “It is like representing, it feels so good.”
The GSC had strong placings across the high point podiums for each age group. The meet is the last of the season for swimmers to hit qualifying times for the upcoming OPA Alaska Swimming State Championships at Anchorage’s Bartlett High School Pool on April 23-26. All swimmers did not compete in the same number of events, as some have already achieved qualifying times for the state age group meet (formerly known as the Junior Olympics) and others are at different stages of training.
“I have been going to this meet for most of my life because it is a Juneau-hosted meet,” said GSC’s Liam Kiessling, 16. “The meet means a lot to the coaches. I know this meet was created in honor of Coach Seth’s (assistant coach Seth Cayce) late sister and the tragedy that happened here in Juneau. It means a lot to swim in this meet each year. For me a lot of times this meet has been a way to achieve times for a later meet. Like JOs, which is Alaska State swimming now, and it was always an important meet for achieving those times. Now that I have gone a little faster, this meet just means a lot to see everyone in Southeast, all my friends. Just socialize with people I barely see. I did set my 200 fly JO time, which I hadn’t swam in two years. So I might be swimming it now at state, but it is important that I did this, it is like a memory. I will do all seven swims at JOs. I will be doing my main swims like the 100 back, the 50 back, probably the 100 fly, the 200 back, 200 IM and the 50 fly.”
GSC’s Katya Foy (age 15) topped the 15-19 girls individual scoring with 45 points through her swim events, followed by Sarah Anderson (15) and Madeline Rose Manlulu (15) with 42 apiece, and Bailey Fisher (17) fourth with 40 points among the 13 swimmers in that grouping. GSC’s Maddox Rasmussen (16), Annabelle Woodruff (15), Amy Liddle (16) and Kaelyn Szefler (17) were in the top 10, with Avery Smith (16) and Kennedy Miller (16) in the mix.
“I am really excited for JOs this year,” Fisher said. “I am also really wanting to do a summer meet this year. At JOs, I will be swimming the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 500 free, 50 fly, 100 fly, and the 100 IM and 50 breast. I am really hoping to drop time in my 50 free and my 100 free, my 500, and my 100 fly.”
BBSC’s Zach Martens (16) topped the 15-19 boys with 70 points, GSC’s Levi Phelps (15) was second with 55 and GSC’s Kiessling third at 41 among 10 swimmers. GSC’s Keagan Andrews (15) was sixth and Gabe Aldrich (16) eighth.
“I got two JO cuts,” said GSC’s Keagan Andrews, 15. “One for 50 breaststroke and one for 100 IM, and I shaved tons of time. Coach Daemon (head coach Daemon Vargas) gave the best advice and I didn’t exactly feel ready, but he told me I was and it worked so I will take it.”
Andrews noted that watching the team’s talent level was inspiring.
“Definitely Liam (Kiessling),” he said. “He is always really fast. Levi Phelps, Kaden Aldrich…any GSC swimmer. This is my third year swimming. I am pretty new, but it is just a really good community and anyone can find a friend here. It is great for all ages. When I was younger, I didn’t want to try any sports and my mom was like, ‘Try swimming, it is super easy, and you need to learn anyway.’ So I hopped in the pool and just never stopped. It might not have been as easy as she thought and there are lots of downs and lots of ups, but it is so much fun.”
GSC’s Soboleff claimed the 13-14 girls group with 58 points, followed by KKW’s Anneka Adams (13) at 57 and VSC’s Tori Miller (13) 50 among 15 swimmers. GSC’s Nyah Harris (13) was fifth, and Janessa Dutton (13) and Elsinore Higgins (14) tied for sixth, with Evelyn Hochstoeger (13) and Natalie MacKinnon (14) in the mix.
“I want to swim as much as I can and the state meet is coming up,” Soboleff said. “And then I want to try for a meet in the summer if possible, but just try and not lose the times I have made after the season. I am swimming the longer distance events at JOs. I like to do those. And then I think I will swim some breaststroke because it is just a fun stroke that I enjoy.”
VSC’s Cyrus Hulebak (14) topped the 13-14 boys with 63 points, BBSC’s Ben Lihou (14) had 59 and VSC’s Hakon Eddy (13) 58 among 13 swimmers. GSC’s Kaden Aldrich (14) was fourth with 52 points. GSC’s Joshua Ely (13), Tyler Anderson (13), Leon Ward (13) and Travis Mateo (13) were in the mix.
GSC’s Molly Woodruff (12) topped the 11-12 girls with 60 points and teammate Grace Propsom (12) was second in a tie with KKW’s Lulu Mercer (12) at 52 among 31 swimmers. GSC’s Anabelle Sullivan (12), Gemma Peterson (12), Coleen Chuidian (12) and Matisse Suarez (11) were in the top 10 and Maia Cole-Undurraga (11), Shelby Jones (12), Evelyn Thomas (12), Layla Drummond (12), Henley Peterson (11), Cerys Savikko (12), Charlotte Trego (12), Jane Tingey (12), Beatrice Thomas (11), Avery Szefler (12), Nora Padron (12), Juniper Harris (11) and Isla Stekoll (11) in the mix.
GSC’s Austin Treston (12) led the 11-12 boys with 68 points, KKW’s Roman Olsen (12) second with 63 and VSC’s Jackson Zweifel (12) 53 among 20 swimmers. GSC’s Oliver Albrecht (12) was fourth with 49. GSC’s Sam Thatcher (12), Keenan Phelps (12) and Reid Cummings (12) were in the top 10 and Fraser Jansen (12), Elias Ross (12), Axel Andreassen (12), James Dorn (11), Sam von Rekowski (12) and Leif Thompson (12) in the mix.
BBSC’s Veva Chase (10) led the 9-10 girls with 72 points, GSC’s Emily Treston (10) 61 and VSC’s Rosie Lohr (10) 49 to top the podium. GSC’s Frances Higgins (10), Auri Jones (9) and Smith Durham (9) made top 10 and Gabby Nguyen (10), Ophelia Kvasnikoff (9), Acacia Forbes (9), Greta Thompson (10), Abigail Auerswald (10), Ellie Odom (9) and Kathryn Sperry (10) were in the mix.
VSC’s Trygve Marohl (10) topped the 9-10 boys with 67 points, VSC’s Soren Eddy (10) second with 53 and BBSC’s Quinn Mahoskey (10) 48. GSC’s Mateus Suarez (9) was fourth with 41.50 and Samuel Bizzarro (10), Brayden Sullivan (10) and Finn Cummings (10) in the top 10. GSC’s Corbin Hall (10), Finn Taintor (9), Barrow West (9), Simon Ross (9) and Gus Kajdan (10) in the mix.

VSC’s Raymond Gillen (8) topped the 8-and-under boys with 66 points, BBSC’s Jackson Martens (8) second with 65, VSC’s Rowdy Hutto (8) third with 44 and GSC’s Will Sullivan (7), Wesley Kajdan (7) and Dylan Dubois (8) in the mix.
"I am, once again, thoroughly impressed by the swimming community here in the Southeast," GSC head coach Daemon Vargas said. "For most of the youth athletes in this area this was the end of their competitive season and, for some, their first real swim meet, and I was amazed by how cooperative and supportive they all were, and not just within our team. I saw many of our athletes cheering for their friends on other teams as well. I got to learn a bit about the history of the meet and how it came to memorialize Savannah Cayce, who was much beloved by the community and whose family still makes significant contributions to our program.”
Vargas, 33, replaced former head coach Scott Griffith, 53, who retired in August after 37 years of coaching — 21 of those with GSC. Vargas’ official first day was Nov. 1, and he has been around the Dimond Park Aquatic Center and Augustus Brown Pool every day. He is a lifelong aquatic athlete and has been coaching multiple age groups since 2014. His previous coaching work was at Quicksilver Swimming in San Jose, California. He is joined in Juneau by wife Polaris, 33, daughter River, 5, son Nihilus, 3, and four-month-old son Haco.
“I also got to meet with the other coaches in our area,” Vargas said of the weekend. “Most of us are very new here, and I am coming away from this meet with a broader view and a new vision for the future of swimming here in the Southeast, one where we can build off of that camaraderie to create more inclusion and more opportunities for the teams in the smaller communities."
