The second day of the 77th annual Juneau Lions Club Gold Medal Basketball Tournament featured six teams punching their ticket to the semifinals, two teams advancing to face top seeds that haven’t played yet, but have had ample time to scout opponents and one bracket that is yet to play.
In the B bracket, Haines defeated Hoonah 79-71 behind 31 points from Tyler Swinton and double digits from Colton Combs, Kaleb Tompkins and Jacob Friske. They will meet Yakutat, a team that is showing glimpses of their past legacies. Yakutat slowed down arc-shooting Vinnie Edenshaw and Hydaburg 69-54 behind 23 points from Arthur Adams. That game has an asterisk next to it for basketball pundits as Hydaburg was playing their second game of the day. Yakutat started Monday morning with a tournament highlight game against Kake, pulling out an 82-80 win. Edenshaw went for 37 and Jaren Carl 20 in that game while Kake’s Dominic Ross tallied 24 and Keontay Jackson 16.
There are now six B teams with one loss and facing elimination. On Tuesday, Klawock plays Angoon at 10:30 a.m. and Kake faces Metlakatla at 7 p.m. On Wednesday, Hydaburg faces the Klawock/Angoon winner and Hoonah faces the Kake/Metlakatla winner.
In the C bracket, Hydaburg toppled Yakutat 94-59 behind 23 points from Darren Edenshaw, 21 from TJ Young and 19 from Ben Young. They will face top seed Kake at noon Tuesday. Hoonah toppled Angoon 82-51 behind 22 points from Anthony Lindoff, 21 from Joe Coronell and 17 from Travis Dybdahl. Hoonah plays the other unplayed top seed Metlakatla at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Elimination games for this bracket begin Wednesday.
The Masters bracket saw Klukwan defeat Sitka 86-66 behind 18 points from Stuart Dewitt, and four others in double figures, to earn the Thursday semifinal against Hoonah who had defeated Angoon 56-50 on Sunday. Angoon and Sitka play an elimination game on Wednesday.
In the Womens bracket Craig defeated Kake 58-50 behind 28 points from Nani Weimer, and Yakutat toppled Hoonah 71-26 behind 19 points from Rose Fraker. They will meet in the semifinal on Thursday. Angoon, Kake, Hoonah and Metlakatla play in elimination games on Wednesday.
The Open bracket will begin at 1:30 p.m. with Mt. Edgecumbe playing AML and at 5:30 p.m. Metlakatla plays FILCO.
