Goldbelt Tram reopening date still uncertain; CEO says another update expected July 31

Company says increased activity involving repairs may be visible during coming weeks; website still lists various tram jobs available

The Goldbelt Tram will miss most of this year’s cruise ship season, but it’s unknown if it will miss all of it.

An update by Goldbelt Inc. on Wednesday states the tram, closed since an accident on April 30, does not yet have a scheduled reopening date. The notice also states "visitors may also notice increased activity around the Lower Terminal in the coming weeks."

"Crews are continuing maintenance, safety reviews, inspections, and other related work in support of Goldbelt's ongoing commitment to safe operations," the notice states. "Temporary work areas, barriers, or other visible activity may be present while these efforts are underway.

Goldbelt CEO McHugh Pierre, in an email to the Juneau Independent, stated another update about the tram’s status is expected July 31.

The update posted by the company on the tram’s Facebook page notes "we anticipate sharing information about future employment opportunities as plans advance." The company’s website lists several openings for maintenance, visitor service and other positions.

A cafe, gift shop and other guest operations at the tram’s base station were reopened shortly after the cable car service was halted.

The accident occurred the night of April 30 while five employees were in the descending car, which hit the base station at a high rate of speed. Two former managers of the cable lift have stated the accident was due to mechanical and operator failures that kept the two cars from slowing automatically as they were supposed to when approaching the docking stations.

Goldbelt in mid-May announced it was issuing refunds to season pass holders, but passes "will remain fully active and valid for the entire season once operations resume."

The last day with more than one cruise ship scheduled in Juneau is Sept 29 and the last ship of the season is scheduled Oct. 6.
