An 18-year-old man who suffered a serious leg injury on a trail near the upper part of the Goldbelt Tram on Friday was rescued in a coordinated effort between emergency responders, Temsco Helicopters Inc. and Juneau Mountain Rescue, according to Capital City Fire/Rescue.

The rescue began after the hiker heard a snap in his lower leg while hiking about one-quarter of the way down the Mount Roberts Trail from the upper tram station, CCFR noted in a Facebook post at 7:36 p.m.

"Due to the steep terrain and remote location, a coordinated technical rescue operation was initiated," the post notes.

"CCFR rescuers were flown into the area and hiked to the patient’s location where medical care was provided. Additional specialized rescue resources were requested to assist with the complex evacuation. Through the teamwork of CCFR, Temsco helicopters, and Juneau Mountain Rescue, crews successfully worked to bring the patient to a location where further medical care could be provided."

"The incident shows the challenges of backcountry rescues in Juneau’s mountains, as well as the importance of strong partnerships between public safety agencies and volunteer rescue organizations," according to CCFR.
