Crimson Bears win three at Kayhi Kings’ field

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears baseball team brought home three road-game wins from Ketchikan, defeating the Kings 9-0 on Friday and 9-5 and 4-3 Saturday.


Hunter Carte pitched five innings, allowed four hits, walked two batters and struck out five in the Friday evening win at Kayhi’s Norman Walker Field. Drew Cadigan-McAdoo (2 IP, 3 H, 1 SO) closed.


Senior Madden Mendoza led with three runs batted in and sophomore Micah Nelson had two. Madden Mendoza, senior Nate Fick and sophomore Charlie Begenyi led with two hits. Begenyi scored two runs.


Kayhi’s Ace Asper (5.2 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 1 SO) and Wyatt Balluta (1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 BB) shared the mound. Jesse Albecker led with three hits and Ayden Manabat had two.


In Saturday’s 9-5 win, senior Marcus Mendoza (4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 6 BB, 3 SO), N. Fick (2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 SO) and freshman Isaac Kirsch (1 IP, 1 SO) shared the mound.


Madden Mendoza led with four RBI and senior Chris Andersen had three. Nelson, Carte and Madden Mendoza scored two runs and had two hits each. Marcus Mendoza had two hits. Senior Riley Fick earned three walks.


Manabat (1.2 IP, 6 H, 8 R, 6 BB, 1 SO), Charles Kroscavage (3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 SO) and Balluta (2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 3 BB) shared the mound. Zyrus Manabat led Kings’ bats with two RBI, one hit and one run scored. Owen Mendoza earned three walks.


In Saturday’s 4-3 nightcap win, R. Fick (3 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 2 SO), Nelson (2 IP, 2 H, 2 SO) and senior Cayman Huff (2 IP, 3 H) shared the mound.


Madden Mendoza led with two RBI and one hit. Carte had two hits and one run scored. Nelson scored two runs. Senior Tyler Kookesh had one hit and one run.


Kayhi’s Brady Kline took the loss (7 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 4 SO). A. Manabat and Kroscavage had one RBI apiece. Albecker and Bryant Marquez led with two hits apiece.


The Southeast Conference Region V tournament will be played at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park field May 28-30. The winner of the tournament advances to the Division I state tournament in Anchorage, June 4-6.


One SEC (JDHS, KTN, SIT) team advances to state, one from the Mid-Alaska Conference (West Valley, North Pole, Lathrop), two from the Railbelt Conference (Soldotna, Palmer, Wasilla, Colony), three from the Cook Inlet Conference (Service, Chugiak, South, Dimond, West, East, Eagle River, Bartlett) and one at-large selection.
