JDHS earns Skagway Invitational wrestling team title

Seven Crimson Bears earn weight bracket championships

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé wrestling team dominated the Skagway Invitational over the weekend, putting seven grapplers on the top of the podium and winning the boys’ team title with 252.5 points and the girls’ team title with 70.


“We wrestled well,” JDHS coach Adam Messmer said. “After the first round, we had to fix a few mistakes, but the kids adjusted and had some good success.”


Wrangell placed second in the boys’ tourney with 176, followed by Haines with 104, Metlakatla with 84.5, Skagway with 67.5 and Hoonah with 60.5.


Hoonah was second in the girls’ tourney with 58 points. Metlakatla had 41, Wrangell 34 and Haines 11.


First-place individual finishes for JDHS included sophomore Nixie Schooler at 114 pounds, freshman Landon Hill at 119 pounds, junior Tristan Ridgeway at 125 pounds, sophomore Sunny Dutton at 126 pounds, junior Camden Messmer at 130 pounds, sophomore Caleb Aube at 152 pounds and junior Jed Davis at 160 pounds.


Second-place JDHS finishes included sophomore Carson Kautz at 112 pounds, freshman Jayden Frickey at 112 pounds, freshman Matthew Shockley at 119 pounds, junior Felix Hesson at 130 pounds, senior Oliver Abel at 140 pounds, senior Marlin Cox at 145 pounds, freshman Ciara Dutton at 145 pounds and senior Alex Marx-Beierly at 171 pounds.


Third-place JDHS finishes included freshman Fiona McFarlin at 114 pounds, freshman William Hulson at 125 pounds, sophomore Joshua Beedle at 130 pounds, junior Toriana Johnson at 138 pounds and senior Kyle Carter at 285 pounds.


JDHS freshman Jack Pegues placed fourth at 125 pounds, junior Joseph “Max” Webster fifth at 140 pounds, junior Gage Keller fifth at 145 pounds, sophomore Brody Vavalis fifth at 171 pounds, sophomore Michael Carson sixth at 130 pounds, freshman Beckham Selvig-Baker sixth at 140 pounds, freshman Luke Darbonne seventh at 130 pounds and freshman Caleb Demmert seventh at 145 pounds.


JDHS will travel to the Mountain City Classic Invitational in Anchorage next weekend and will host a tournament Nov. 7-8.
