The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears girls and the Ketchikan Kings boys earned the team titles at the Region V Track and Field Championships on the Fawn Mountain track and field in Ketchikan on Friday and Saturday.

“We had some ideal conditions,” JDHS head coach Brandi Adams said. “For field events we experienced sun, hail, disappointments and some personal bests.”

The JDHS girls scored 110 points to Kayhi’s 25, the Kings’ boys scored 80 points to the Crimson Bears' 56.

“I am really happy,” Ketchikan head coach Alex Pennino said. “At the beginning of the year I did not expect that. Carter (Phillips) won the 800. Him and Issac (Evison), even though Juneau’s Zachery Bos beat them in the (1,600 and 3,200) they got second and third and scored points. We had a pretty good team all the way around, we didn’t get shut out in any event on the boy’s side."

"With Thunder Mountain gone, and when somebody has a deeper team than you it can be difficult to figure out where to stick the bodies in the right spots. Myself and our other coaches figured out where we needed to stick some guys so they could have the most success."

"Henry (Vail) was great. He is a guy who will improve from the prelims to the finals by sometimes an entire second. Our boys 4x100 and 4x200 did great, those guys really got their handoffs down. That is something we take a lot of pride in. Our girls really impressed me too. Ryan (Elerding) was really strong. Our girls were young, our sprinting girls were beat up after a long season. Overall I was really happy.”

Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé sophomore Bella Connally wins the women's 100-meter with a time of 12.51 during the Division 1 Region V Championship at Ester Shea Track and Field on Friday, May 22, 2026. (Christopher Mullen / Ketchikan Daily News)

JDHS sophomore Bella Connally led the Crimson Bears girls scoring with a win in the 100-meter dash in her season best 12.51 seconds, with sophomores Shandiin Frommherz second in 13.43 and Mya Hayes third in 14.09. Connally and Frommherz qualified for the state championships with their times (non-qualifiers: 3. Hayes; 4. KTN fr Audrey Mettler 14.74; 5. KTN fr Charm Danao 14.93; 6. JD sr Isabella Reyes-Boyer 15.07; 7. KTN sr Lauren Tucker 15.78).

In Division I the first-place finisher in each individual event from Regions III, IV, V and VI plus the next 12 statewide best times or distances from the finals qualify for the state championships. The top relay team from those regions and the next four best statewide times from finals also qualify. DII has the same criteria, except the regions are II, III, V and VI.

Connally also won the 200 meters in 27.16 to qualify for state (2. JD so Hayes 30.17; 3. JD fr Clara Van Kirk 31.19; 4. KTN Danao PB 30.96; 5. KTN Mettler PB 30.98; 6. KTN fr Jazlynn Ramsey PB 31.99).

“It is a good step in the right direction and the end goal is state,” JDHS’ Bella Connally said. “For my 4x100 team, we are all excited for state and what we can do there. We are all close and trust each other, so when we go out there we are calm and just do our best with no worries. All the girls on my team are just extremely athletic and talented in their events. Taking the region team title is an amazing accomplishment for us.”

JDHS sophomores Addie Hartman, Shandiin Frommherz and Mya Hayes joined Connally on the girls 4x100 relay with a state qualifying time of 52.38 (2. KTN 58.44 - Danao, Tucker, Mettler, Ramsey).

On the boys side JDHS junior Orion Paden qualified for state, winning the 100 meters in a PB 11.65 (2. KTN sr Evan Dash PB 11.68; 3. KTN sr Liam Woodward PB 11.98; 4. KTN fr Nick Piazza PB 12.07; 5. JD jr Bryden Roberts PB 12.23; 6 JD jr Krew Ridle 21.28; 7. KTN jr Parker Hagan PB 12.55; 8. JD fr William Westmoreland 12.83).

“For me personally, winning my events was a massive achievement after putting in so much work this season,” Paden said. “I was actually out for three weeks right before the meet due to an injury, so being able to come back and win the 100-meter dash was incredible — I give all the glory to God for that.”

Paden also won the boys high jump with a PB five-foot-eight leap to qualify for state, along with KTN sophomore Ike Pennino who placed second with the same mark, but more misses, and KTN sophomore Anthony Talaugea going 5’ 6 (4. JD fr Vinnie Nizich 5’ 4; 5. JD Sean Sangster 5’; KTN fr Malik Jordan NH).

“When it comes to the high jump I have realized it is not really about winning or even placing well anymore,” Paden said. “It is truly about the lifelong friends I have made through the event, like Iké Pennino and Ashton Peterson. They have become some of my closest friends simply from competing together. I really want to thank my teammates and friends for making this entire season so fun and enjoyable. Most importantly, I thank God for giving me the strength and ability to compete. Running is a true gift, and I feel incredibly blessed to do it."

"As the state meet approaches, I realize my focus is not on finishing first or making the podium. For me, it is about having one more week — one final week to spend with my team and the friends I have made through this sport. I am excited to run and jump, but more than anything, I am excited for one last meet alongside my friends.”

Ketchikan junior Henry Vail won the boys 200 meters in 23.34, qualifying for state along with teammate Dash in a PB 23.72 and JDHS’ Paden in 23.81 (4. KTN Piazza PB 24.22; 5. JD Roberts PB 24.24; 6. JD Ridle PB 24.64).

Vail also won the boys 400 meters in his season best 51.23 (2. KTN fr Hunter Eckert PB 57.88; 3. JD jr Austin Huang 57.94; 4. KTN Piazza PB 59.85; 5. JD Westmoreland PB 1:00.0).

“The 200 and 400 are very similar for me,” Ketchikan’s Vail said. “I love running them and it makes me feel better to do better in them. What I believe that improves me the most is faster competition to race against like those at state. It will be more challenging for me as that will push me to have to go even faster. To take the men’s title over Juneau feels very good as we have lost to them all year. To finally beat them in something that makes the community and the team feel awesome and I cannot wait to see what the few that get to go to state do as they compete at the next level of competition.”

Ketchikan senior Carter Phillips won the boys' 800 meters in 2:09.01 (2. JD so Anderson Murray PB 2:11.89; 3. JD so Emmett Hightower PB 2:12.64; 4. KTN so Isaac Evison PB 2:12.64; 5. KTN jr Blaine Garlick PB 2:15.40; 6. JD jr Gage Keller PB 2:15.49; 7. JD so Lucas Nelson-Vallejo PB 2:23.44; 8. KTN so Ezra Roskam 2:30.21).

“For the regions 800, I mainly focused on setting a strong lead from the gun and maintaining a far enough distance to avoid any potential kicks from competitors,” Kayhi’s Phillips said. “In preparation for state I am planning on doing different pacing workouts and some short sprint work to maintain my fast-twitch muscles. I am hoping that the faster competition at state can help drag me to a PR, maybe even a school record.”

Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé sophomore Nevah Lupro won the girls' 800 meters with a time of 2:38.89 during the Division 1 Region V Championship at Ester Shea Track and Field on Friday, May 22, 2026. (Christopher Mullen / Ketchikan Daily News)

JDHS junior Zacheriah Bos qualified for state by winning the two grueling distance races.

Bos won the 1,600 meters in a PB 4:46.04 (2. KTN Phillips PB 4:46.41; 3. KTN Evison 4:54.35; 4. JD Huang 5:05.43; 5. JD Murray 5:11.36; 6. JD Hightower 5:12.37; 7. KTN Roskam PB 5:28.78; 8. KTN fr Copper Westergard PB 5:44.74)

Bos won the 3,200 in a PB 10:14.76 (2. KTN Evison PB 10:33.34; 3. KTN Phillips SB 10:39.02; 4. JD so Carson Kautz PB 10:51.51; 5. JD so Lucas Nelson-Vallejo PB 11:16.51; 6. KTN Roskam PB 11:41.95).

“The meet was an answered prayer really,” Bos said. “Psalms 54:4 says it better than I could, “Surely God is my help: the Lord is the one who sustains me” and thats really how the whole meet went for me because I did not get injured, races went well, and I could not ask for better opponents than the Ketchikan guys. Specifically Carter Philips, he and I were head to head all season and I will miss racing him. That is also what I love about the sports here in Southeast — on the track the competition is fierce, but off the track the camaraderie is amazing. State will be interesting. I am not near as fast on a state level as regions, but we have got a few good relay teams that will probably do well and I am looking forward to my first state track meet.”

Elerding also won the girls triple jump with 30 feet 1.5 inches (2. JD fr Eleanor Peterson 27’ 08).

“Well, with the triple jump I was pretty happy since I have been so close to winning every year at regions, but did not until this one,” Elerding said. “And for state I am really just hoping for a PR. And for the hurdles I was also very happy because my whole family did not realize that I was going to be winning it and they started going crazy when they saw how far ahead I was, and that really boosted my moral. I think it made me go fast enough to PR. Heading into state I am very excited to do my events, but I will be the only girl for my team going so I just hope I can stay hyped up alone. But Anchorage is fun because right after all my events I will be pigging out and eating at all the fast food places they have.”

Ketchikan freshman Jazlynn Ramsey was the only other Lady Kings athlete to qualify for state, winning the long jump with a PB 12’ 2.50 (2. JD jr Bahn PB 11’ 8.75).
