JDHS girls soccer opens season with win at Ketchikan

Crimson Bears defeat Kayhi 5-1 at Kings’ Esther Shea Field

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears girls varsity soccer team opened its 2026 season with a 5-1 road win over former conference rival Ketchikan at Esther Shea Field on Monday.


JDHS senior wingback Kenzie Simonson scored the first two goals of the match. The first goal was assisted by senior striker Peyton Wheeler and the second by sophomore midfielder Ayla Erikson.


Sophomore striker/wingback Gracie Snyder scored the third goal, assisted by Erikson.


Erikson scored the fourth goal, assisted by junior striker Clairee Overson.


Wheeler scored the final goal, assisted by Erikson.


Wheeler had nine shots on goal, junior midfielder Riley Schultz three, Simonson three, Erikson three, freshman Madelyn Dale two and Snyder two.


JDHS senior goalkeeper Tearamae Alexander earned the win, playing all 80 minutes.


Crimson Bears sophomore defenders Nellie Stowers and Marigold Lindoff also played 80 minutes, as did Erikson. Simonson and Schultz earned 75 minutes, Wheeler 68, senior midfielder/defender Piper Blackgoat Diehl 60, junior defender/wingback Kate Bovitz 56, Dale 49, Overson 35, Snyder 34, freshman wingback/midfielder Maya Mothershead 26, freshman defender Emma Kovach 25, freshman midfielder Mia Alexander 20, and freshmen midfielders Hailey Romero and Amaya Henderson 15 apiece.

According to JDHS coach Matt Dusenberry the team’s Hard Hat game award went to Simonson.


JDHS plays in the Division I Railbelt Conference with Wasilla, Colony, Lathrop, and West Valley. Ketchikan is the only member of the DII Southeast Conference. The two teams meet again on Tuesday.


The Crimson Bears girls soccer team includes:


Seniors -  Koby Yturbe, Peyton Wheeler, Lorelei Urrutia-Lugo, Anberlin Tingey, Randy Stichert, Kenzie Simonson, Sasha Morrison, Hazel McWilliams, Ainsley Mallott, Lydia Heidemann, Grace Gazdig, Raynona Fraker, Piper Blackgoat Diehl and Tearamae Alexander.


Juniors - Alyssa Travis, Riley Schultz, Analia Perry, Claire Overson, Jillian Levy, Lillian Dennis and Kate Bovitz.


Sophomores - Brynlie Tingey, Zoe Tagsip, Nellie Stowers, Gracie Snyder, Marigold Lindoff, Delphine Hochstoeger, Ayla Erikson, Cooper Blackgoat Diehl and Lanaya Barrick.


Freshmen - Rylee Schneider, Hailey Romero, Maya Mothershead, Emma Kovach, Anna Howell, Amaya Henderson, Ruby Ewing, Hannah Dolan, Madelyn Dale and Mia Alexander.
