The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears girls varsity soccer team finished a two-game road series sweep Tuesday over their former conference rival Ketchikan at Esther Shea Field with their second 5-1 win in as many days.

“I believe on the clock we scored in the first minute of the first and second half,” JDHS coach Matt Dusenberry said. “Thirty seconds to be exact for Peyton (Wheeler) in half one and 60 seconds for Ayla (Erikson) in the second half.”

JDHS senior striker Peyton Wheeler had a highlight reel game with four goals — two in each half — and provided solid midfield defense among the talented Crimson Bears.

Wheeler’s first goal was assisted by junior striker Claire Overson and her second was assisted by junior midfielder Riley Schultz.

Erikson’s goal in the second half came via Overson’s second assist.

Wheeler’s next two goals were assisted by senior midfielder/defender Piper Blackgoat Diehl and freshman striker Madelyn Dale.

We gave the hard hat to Riley Schultz today,” Dusenberry said. “As we explained to her, she put in a ‘proper shift,’ meaning she was just so consistent and solid in her play, winning balls and helping our team move the ball around the field.”

Erikson had seven shots on goal, Wheeler and sophomore striker/wingback Gracie Snyder four apiece. Dale, Schultz and freshman midfielder Mia Alexander put two shots each against the Kayhi keeper. Senior wingback Kenzie Simonson, freshman midfielder Hailey Romero, freshman midfielder Amaya Henderson and freshman wingback/midfielder Maya Mothershead had one shot on goal each.

JDHS senior goalkeeper Tearamae Alexander earned her second win playing all 80 minutes again. The Crimson Bears put all traveling players on the pitch during the match.

“We had six freshmen all on the field at once for a good 15 minutes, which is exciting to see,” Dusenberry said. “Great contribution from all 17 girls on this trip.”

Sophomore defenders Nellie Stowers and Marigold Lindoff earned 80 minutes apiece in the contest. Schultz and Erikson played 68 minutes apiece, and Wheeler 66. Dale and Simonson were in action 56 minutes apiece, Overson 50, junior defender/wingback Kate Bovitz 49, Blackgoat Diehl 43, Snyder and freshman wingback/midfielder Maya Mothershead 38 apiece, Henderson 32, freshman defender Emma Kovach 31, Alexander 29, and Romero 26.

Railbelt Conference Division I JDHS had defeated Southeast Conference DII Ketchikan 5-1 on Monday in the rain. Tuesday provided some weather relief.

No serious rain today, we saw the sun,” Dusenberry said. “The night before was one of the worst weather games I have stood on the sidelines for. I believe it was 36 degrees, we had hard rain, hail, snow, wind gusts…The team really did a great job yesterday of adjusting to the elements by the second half of last night’s game and ended up with some really nice, multi-player play that led to some fantastic goals.”

The JDHS Crimson Bears girls and boys will host the Cook Inlet Conference DI Chugiak Mustangs this weekend at the Adair Kennedy Park soccer field. The girls play at 5:15 p.m. Friday, followed by the boys at 7 p.m. The girls play at 2 p.m. Saturday, followed by the boys at 3:45 p.m.

“They will be a nice challenge,” Dusenberry said. “I know the coach and a few of the players on their squad.”
