JDHS spikers battle at Dimond Service Invitational

Crimson Bears keep building resume for state competition

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé volleyball team won six sets and lost 12 on an Anchorage road trip over the weekend as they continue to get into Region V tournament shape with the hope of advancing to the mid-November state tournament.


The Crimson Bears fell to East Davis East Anchorage 3-0 on Thursday before entering the Dimond/Service High School Invitational Volleyball Tournament on Friday and Saturday.


JDHS opened pool play Friday among 20 teams in four groups. The Crimson Bears fell to the Dimond Lynx 25-16, 25-20; split with the Mountain City Christian Academy Lions 15-25, 26-24; fell to the Barrow Whalers 23-25, 22-25 and defeated Lathrop 25-23, 25-21. That play put them into Saturday’s Silver Bracket. JDHS opened with a loss to the Grace Christian Lions 25-22, 20-25, 10-15, and fell into the Silver Consolation portion where they defeated the Lathrop Malemutes 25-15, 25-20 and lost to East 25-22, 25-23.


The Homer Mariners won the Silver Championship over the Kenai Cardinals 26-24, 23-25, 15-13. The Palmer Moose and Grace Christian tied for third, East took fifth, JDHS sixth and the West Anchorage Eagles and Lathrop tied for seventh.


The Ketchikan Lady Kings also were in the tournament and opened Friday with a 25-16, 25-15 loss to the Service Cougars; fell to Palmer 25-13, 25-7; lost to the Valdez Buccaneers 25-18, 25-20 and split with Grace Christian 22-25, 25-21. That play put them into the Bronze Bracket where they opened with a 25-21, 25-11 win over the North Pole Patriots and lost to MCCA 22-25, 25-12, 13-15 to place second. 


The top-tiered Gold Bracket saw the South Anchorage Wolverines defeat Dimond 25-20, 26-24 for the championship. The Chugiak Mustangs placed third, Valdez fourth, Service fifth, the Colony Knights sixth, Soldotna Stars seventh and Barrow eighth.


JDHS now has a 20-15-7 match record with 58 set wins and 48 set losses. They are 7-0-1 against Division I Region V opponent Ketchikan, and their record is 4-0 in the Southeast Conference standings against the Lady Kings.


JDHS defeated Kayhi 2-0 (25-19, 25-17) and 2-0 (25-19, 25-21) in the Southeast Jamboree Aug. 22-23 at Mt. Edgecumbe, defeated Kayhi 3-1 (25-19, 30-28, 18-25, 26-24) and 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-16) at conference play Sept. 5-6 in Ketchikan, defeated Kayhi 2-0 (25-21, 25-23) Sept. 18-19 at the Slamma Jamma tournament in Sitka, tied the Lady Kings 1-1 (21-25, 25-13) Oct. 4 at the Juneau Jive and defeated Kayhi 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-19) and 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18) Oct. 17-18 in conference play at Juneau.


JDHS will host Sitka on Friday and Saturday. Game times are C team at 4:15 p.m., JV 5:45 p.m. and varsity 7:15 p.m..


The Region V tournament is Nov. 7-8 at Ketchikan and state is Nov. 13-15 at Anchorage’s Alaska Airlines Center.
