The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé swim and dive team found a unique way to honor their seniors Saturday at the Dimond Park Aquatic Center — let them thrash the coaches in a 200-yard freestyle relay.

“When I was a freshman, I remember only the seniors got to race against the coaches,” JDHS senior Deedee Mills said. “But even then I knew we would win when we were seniors.”

The winning time wasn’t important. JDHS seniors Clive Mateo, Valerie Peimann, Mills and Vincent Hayes were already drying the pool water from their bodies when “senior” coaches Kristin Jones, Carole Triem, Savona Kiessling and Stig Cunningham finished. Of importance were the careers the coaching staff and the community of Juneau had impacted.

“I never thought that it would feel like this,” Mills said. “It has gone by so fast. I am proud to see myself improve and getting to see other people improve and know that myself and others worked really hard for what we got. It is a really good feeling.”

JDHS senior Valerie Peimann said, “It is pretty crazy this is the final home meet. It is kind of sad, but bittersweet at the same time. I am really excited to go on and do other things in college, but I am sad to be leaving all my teammates here.”

The win over the coaches was extra.

“It was awesome,” she said. “I was a little scared because some of them still swim a lot, but we did good.”

On Saturday, Peimann also won the girls’ 200 freestyle in 1:57.69, won the girls’ 100 breaststroke in 1:08.37 and anchored the winning girls’ 200 free relay with Mills, junior Bailey Fisher and freshman Annabell Woodruff in 1:44.03. On Friday she led off the winning girls’ 200 medley relay (juniors Kennedy Miller, Amy Liddle, Lily Francis) that hit 1:49.75, won the girls’ 100 free in 54.36 (Mills placed second in 57.60), won the 100 backstroke in 59.45 and anchored the winning girls’ 400 free relay (Liddle, Francis, Mills) that hit 3:46.77.

On Saturday, Mills placed second in the 50 free with 25.98 (Francis won in 25.23) and placed second in the girls’ 100 back with 1:06.19 (Liddle won in 1:01.45)

Peimann said Juneau pools taught her that “I can do hard things. That is what I remember most. I can wake up early and work hard every day. That is my biggest takeaway.”

On Saturday, Mateo was part of the third-place boys’ 200 medley relay (sophomore Axel Boily, freshman Henry Thatcher, junior Gabe Aldrich) that hit 1:56.38 (Ketchikan won in 1:42.04), placed third in the boys’ 100 breast with 1:13.26 (1. KTN Evan Dash 1:01.03) and fifth in the 100 free with 55.40 (1. Sitka’s Corin Colliver 50.28).

“Senior night kind of reminds me of all the times I got to have with the team and whenever I think about it, it brings back good memories,” Mateo said. “Like, we’ve been doing this since we were in pre-com. It means kind of a reconciliation and kind of an end to things, but at the same time it's a new beginning for stuff too…I was actually part of the Ketchikan team before I joined Juneau so it was kind of funny seeing them, but I'm just reminded a lot of the emotion, especially during swimming, in the sport and how it drives people in general. But I think it has driven us in all good ways, and I don't regret a single thing about joining swimming as a main sport.”

He called the support in the community inspiring. “Our parents and coaches and the rest of the team that are supporting us and our club, and our money and fundraiser have all been such a huge crutch for us, and we are very indebted to all of them,” he said. “We thank very much all of them for just giving us this chance to be here and to fly out and go to these meets and pay for food and do all these fun stuff.”

On Saturday Hayes placed fourth in the boys’ 500 free with 25.16 (1. JDHS So. Liam Kiessling 23.11) and 10th in the 100 back with 1:08.71 (1. Kiessling 54.52). On Friday he placed fourth in the 200 free with 2:05.99 (1. Petersburg’s Logan Tow 1:51.96) and Mateo was sixth in 2:07.90. Hayes also placed sixth in the 500 free with 5:49.18 (1. Tow 5:08.59). Mateo also placed fifth in the 100 back on Friday with 1:04.83 (1. KTN Gavin Harold 57.55) and led off the 400 free relay team (junior Sam Pallenberg, Thatcher, freshman Keagan Andrews) that placed fourth in 3:51.48 (1. Sitka 3:22.86).

“One of my first meets ever was at this pool,” Hayes said. “Freshman year with TM (the now-defunct Thunder Mountain High School). I am happy that I at least got to end it in the pool, even though it is with JD, but it means a lot that I made it through all four years. I got injured during my sophomore year so I had to swim differently than what I had liked, but I am glad I still got to push through all four years to be back here…It feels really awesome knowing that so many people in the community and my life have come to support me throughout my entire journey of swimming...Swimming allowed me to stay in shape and push myself harder than I thought I would have been able to.”

JDHS senior Taylor Mesdag capped off her home diving career scoring 152.80 points to win the girls’ 1-meter diving. Junior teammates Adeline Williams and Moira Bahn placed second and third with 131.85 and 116.45, respectively (4. KTN Mia Calvin 109.30; 2. KTN Lina Merrill 108.20).

“This has been exciting and kind of sad,” Mesdag said. “I am relieved the double is done, but I am really sad. This is my last meet that I am going to have in Juneau. I still have two more meets because we have regions and state, hopefully. But this is my last meet in town, which is pretty sad to think about. But I am probably not going to cry until the end of the night because my best friend is giving my senior speech.”

Mesdag acknowledged the community support through the years and said, “It has been very nice. This was also probably one of my favorite meets because all the judges we had today were either previous divers that I have dove with or two of them were my previous coaches from the past year. So it was really nice to see them again. It is a really cool experience to be able to have judges that I know and respect, and all my family and my friends up behind me, and my coach Savona (Kiessling), who have been here for all four years that I've been diving. We have switched out coaches a lot, but Savona has always been there. So she is really important to me. It is kind of like I got the gang all back together.”

Mesdag also won the dive portion on Friday with 156.80 points (2. Bahn 150.40; 3. Williams 131.05; 4. Calvin 118.60; 5. Merrill 117.95).

“My little sister was a gymnast and I used to do gymnastics with her,” Mesdag said of how she became a diver. “My dad was a gymnast so I used do like tumbling and stuff with him, too. And so that is why I kind of switched from swimming to diving. I really enjoyed having more of the gymnastics aspects in it because I really missed having that when I was a little kid.”

JDHS won the combined meet scoring with 427 points on Saturday (2. Sitka 17; 3. KTN 159; 4. PSG 74; 5. Craig 66; 6. Wrangell 16) and Friday with 483 (2. SIT 202.5; 3. KTN 183; 4. PSG 84; 5. CRG 58.5; 6. WRG 18).
