JSD schools closed, UAS operating remotely, city offices open at 1 p.m. Monday due to snow

Winter storm warning in effect until 6 p.m. Monday, up to eight more inches of snow possible by Tuesday morning, according to weather forecast

Public schools are closed Monday and the University of Alaska Southeast is operating remotely due to snow overnight Sunday that is expected to continue through at least Tuesday, with heavy accumulation possible at times, according to officials.


Also, all City and Borough of Juneau facilities are scheduled to open at 1 p.m., according to the city’s Facebook page. Capital Transit is operating on snow routes.


"Crews are working around the clock to clear CBJ roads as safely and quickly as possible," the post states. "Stay safe and off the roads if you can."


The Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska announced on its Facebook page at 7 a.m. Monday that its offices will be closed today, but "many services may be available remotely."


All Juneau School District classes and activities are closed, according to an email sent just before 6 a.m. Monday.


"With heavy snow expected to continue through the day, all classes, in person meetings, and after school activities and events have been canceled," the email states. "The Board of Education Special Meeting on Awarding of the Superintendent Search Contract will take place as scheduled at noon on Zoom."


District employees should check their work email address for more information about reporting to work, according to the notice. Further updates will be posted at www.juneauschools.org.


All campus buildings are UAS are also closed Monday, according to a notice also sent just before 6 a.m.


"Employees who have remote work agreements in place, as well as those who can effectively pivot to working remotely, should do so," the notice states. "Staff who are unable to pivot to remote work tomorrow should contact their supervisors for further guidance. Designated emergency and essential staff should maintain their on-site duties and report for duty as directed by their supervisor. Please refer to the full UA inclement weather policy guidance for more details."


About two inches of snow are expected during the day, four more inches tonight and two more inches tomorrow, according to the National Weather Service Juneau forecast as of 6 a.m. High temperatures of about 20 degrees and winds up to 15 miles per hour are forecast.


Snow is expected to taper off and winds increase by Wednesday, with temperatures dropping back into single digits late in the week, according to the extended forecast.
