Juneau is now just waiting for the other foot to drop in setting an all-time winter snowfall record.
Total accumulation since Oct. 1 at Juneau International Airport was at 181.7 inches as of 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, which is 12.6 inches shy of the all-time record of 194.3 inches set in 1964-65. It’s possible that gap could be cut in half during the coming day, with up to seven more inches forecast by Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service Juneau.
More snow is also possible during subsequent days, said Zoe Kaplan, a NWS Juneau meteorologist, in an interview Thursday morning.
"We are technically going to see some potential extra accumulations through the weekend, just because we have another system moving in," she said. "It's just a matter of if it's going to be cold enough for that to be all snow, or if it's going to end up turning to rain at some point."
The forecast for early next week calls for cloudy to partly sunny skies Monday and Tuesday, with a chance of snow Tuesday night and Wednesday.
Juneau was about two feet shy of the record two days ago, but another 6.3 inches fell Tuesday and 4.8 inches on Wednesday. NWS Juneau, in a Facebook post Thursday morning, noted the 49.7 inches as of Wednesday is the fourth-highest ever for the entire month of March, with the record of 62.7 inches set in 2007.
