Ten years ago, a group of Juneau-Douglas High School girls set a state record in the 200 medley relay with 1 minute 46.75 seconds. On Saturday, that mark fell as a faster four of Crimson Bears roared to a 1:46.03 to out-touch Eagle River’s 1:46.40 and open the 2025 ASAA State Swim and Dive Championships at Anchorage’s Bartlett High School Pool with the fastest time of the season.
“It is scary being on a relay team with them,” JDHS junior Kennedy Miller said of senior teammate Valerie Peimann and juniors Amy Liddle and Lily Francis. “They are all super fast swimmers!”
Peimann showed just how super by also winning the 100 freestyle in 52.26, the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.85 and by anchoring the girls’ 400 free relay win with a 52.56 split. The four combined championships resulted in Peimann being named the Outstanding Female Competitor of the championships.
“I was very surprised to receive the outstanding swimmer award,” Peimann said. “The amount of work and hours I put into swim isn’t always noticed, and getting that recognition at the state level is awesome. I’ve never done this well at a state meet and ending my high school career with an award like that is priceless.”

Also priceless is sharing a state record with teammates on the opening swim and another state title in the closing swim.
“The medley relay is always one of the scariest for me because it’s the first event of the meet,” Peimann said. “Starting off with that win got my blood pumping and my confidence up. It was a really close race, and I was screaming my head off by the time Lily out-touched the team next to us. I think all four of us went best times on that relay and also getting the state record was the cherry on top.”
Peimann hit a 26.54 backstroke over 50 yards to start the medley relay, besting Eagle River sophomore Keira Gust (27:34).
Miller followed with a 30.55 breaststroke on her 50-yard leg, as she dueled Eagle River junior Lelaina Trembath (30.31).
“Being on a relay is such a big feeling compared to swimming for yourself because you know this is for my team, not just points for me,” Miller said. “It’s the most amount of points you can get, it’s really an important one. Starting off I was watching Valerie, and I got up on the starting block with Lelaina Trembath (Eagle River). She is very fast in breaststroke and that was my leg so it was a very spooky feeling. Valerie came into the wall first and I was off. At the wall I peeked, don’t tell Carole (JDHS coach Triem), I peeked. And I saw her next to me. It was a big feeling of, ‘We can win this, I’m just going to go.’ And I went a 30.5, which is the fastest I have ever gone in a relay swimming breaststroke. So I am very happy with my leg. I’m happy with Val, Amy and Lily, they all swam amazingly. It was such a rush at the end watching Lily finish. It is definitely a crazy feeling to know that we broke a state record…I am not usually getting a first at state. I’m usually getting fourth and sixth. So I’m glad to know I did my part. I contributed.”

Liddle raced the third leg with a 25.31 butterfly over 50 yards against Eagle River senior Reese Woodward (24.57).
“A relay is the most stressful part of any meet,” Liddle said. “You’re not just swimming for yourself, you’re swimming for your team. I dove in the water and thought, I have to do my all for my teammates. We weren’t even thinking about the record as we went in. We just wanted to swim it. When I got out of the water I saw Lily was really close to the second-place person…It was such an exciting feeling.”
Francis closed out the race going stroke-for-stroke with Eagle River senior Sophia Trembath (24.18) and touching the wall first with a 50-yard split of 23.63.
The old JDHS state record of 1:46.75 was set in 2014 by Ciera Kelly, Dakota Isaak, Mia Ruffin and Rielly Walsh.
Peimann’s times also improved her overall swimming resume.
“I was really happy with my individual swims,” Peimann said. “I went personal bests in both of them and qualified for futures in my 100 breast. I’ve been chasing a futures cut for a while now and I was totally shocked when I saw the time. I made a bet with coach Carole (Triem) at the beginning of the meet that if I won both my individual swims she would get a tattoo of my initials — VIP.”

JDHS head coach Triem said, “I told them I get to pick the artist, so I’ll need to find a good one with availability. All my other tattoos are on my arms so this one will be too.”
Saturday’s youthful Crimson Bears were also just 1/100th of a second away from setting a new team record with their 400 free relay state title-winning time of 3:35.63.
Liddle led off with a 53.65 over 100 yards, Francis clocked 53.85, junior Kaelyn Szefler 55.57 and Peimann anchored the swim with 52.56.
“It was definitely stressful, and I was really trying to just keep with everybody and not let my team down,” Szefler said. “I think that was the most stressful part because anything could go wrong and I was just scared of letting everyone down…I could see the Eagle River girl right there, and her hand was coming up and reaching every single time I came to breathe, and I tried to just keep up with her and not drop behind…state was really exciting. I definitely think I accomplished a lot of my goals this season and I can’t wait for next season.”
Francis also won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.31 and placed third in the 100 free with 54.17.
“I feel pretty good,” Francis said after her 50 free. “I am disappointed in myself because I wanted to get a low 24 but, you know, they can’t all be wins…but I won for my team, which I’m very happy about. I got to swim with all these amazing girls… Maizy (Kass, Dimond), she’s the sweetest… Before the meet I just like to keep things light. I like to listen to music and try not to think about anything."

Francis’ relay split was slightly faster than her 50 free win.
“It was a relief to win my event,” Francis said. “The 50 free might be the shortest event, but even if you make one mistake it can mean the difference between first place and fourth place. Anchoring a relay is a different kind of pressure, but me personally I love it because it’s a make or break situation. Either I get the lead, or I don’t. It’s that simple and you just have to not overthink in the moment.”
Liddle placed second in the 100 individual medley with 2:04.43 (1. Eagle River senior Reese Woodward 2:06.02) and second in the 100 fly in 57.07 (1. Eagle River Woodward 55.74).
Miller would also place fourth in the 100 breast with 1:08.31 and seventh in the 100 fly with 1:00.27.
JDHS senior Deedee Mills would place fifth in the 100 free with 54.50 and sixth in the 100 back with 1:00.52 (1. ER Gust 58.43).

JDHS freshman Cora Soboleff made the podium in the 500 free, placing fourth with a time of 5:28.61. (1. ER L. Trembath 5:05.50). Soboleff also placed sixth in the 200 free with 2:03.10 (1. ER L. Trembath 1:54.68).
“The 500 is a hard event since it is so long,” Soboleff said. “But it was nice to finish. The first half is always so slow and you just think, when are you done? It is so hard and I was just trying to keep up with some people. And then I started falling behind because it just takes a lot out of you. Whenever I see the number sign and it goes to 17 on the counters then I always know I’ll get through it, I already got through the worst part. And then my brain just goes somewhere else and I start singing songs in my head to get through the time. Today my sister told me to sing ‘Unstoppable’ but ‘Baby Shark’ kept popping up into my head…I was kind of scared that I wouldn’t even make it to state, and now I am pretty happy that I got fourth and made it to finals.”
JDHS junior Moira Bahn placed eighth in the girls' 1-meter diving with 264.05 points (1. South Anchorage Kensley Denmon 458.25).
“It was really scary, but it was cool to watch all the other girls,” Bahn said. And they are all really amazing. I think I just want to keep on working on actually throwing some of the higher DD (degree of difficulty) dives at practice. A lot of my higher DD dives I don’t like throwing very often so I just wait until the meet to throw them. It’s a lot of fun.”

Classmate Adeline Williams placed 13th in preliminaries on Friday and senior Taylor Mesdag 14th.
“I think it is cool to see girls and guys who just compete on a different level,” Williams said of state. “It is one of the best learning experiences. These judges are looking for different things so you have to really tailor your diving to what they are looking for. They definitely look for really good board work and I love doing board work. I love the atmosphere. I feel like everyone is really supportive here and I like competing with the other teams.”
JDHS placed fourth in the 200 free relay with 1:41.45 as junior Bailey Fisher had a 25.61 split, freshman Katya Foy 25.47, junior Kaelyn Szefler 25.59 and freshman Annabelle Woodruff 24.78. Eagle River won with 1:37.51 (Woodward 24.25, Gust 24.39, fr. Anna Heaphy 24.46, S. Trembath 24.41)
Eagle River won the girls’ team title with 131 points to JDHS’ 116. Petersburg earned the girls' Sportsmanship Award and West Anchorage the girls’ Academic Award.

The boys’ team title would go to West Valley with 69 points, with JDHS sixth at 55 points and Colony (63), Ketchikan (62), Sitka (59) and Dimond (58) in between.
JDHS won the boys’ Academic Award with a GPA of 3.77. West Valley won the boys’ Sportsmanship Award.
Chugiak senior Blake Fazio was selected the Outstanding Male Competitor of the championships. Fazio placed first in the 200 free with 1:39.44 (6. JDHS fr. Levi Phelps 1:51.85) and first in the 100 fly with 49.79.
West Valley won the boys’ opening 200 medley relay in 1:35.44, just ahead of JDHS sophomore Liam Kiessling (24.56), junior Josh Edwards (28.06), Phelps (24.41) and junior Kaden Aldrich (21.65) who combined for a 1:38.68.
Kiessling also placed second in the 100 back with 53.20 (1. COL Beck LaBoucane 52.55) and fourth in the 200 IM with 2:02.25 (1. ER Nate Shockley 1:58.24) with Edwards fifth in 2:04.30.
“Swimming at state has always been a dream of mine since I was young,” Kiessling said. “From placing eighth last year to placing second this year, I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished. I still have much room for improvement and I’ll keep training to place even higher next year.”

JDHS junior Easton Berger placed fourth in 1-meter diving with 306.10 points (1. Service sr. Reubin Williams 445.35) and JDHS junior Alex Davis eighth with 167.60.
“State was absolutely insane,” Berger said. “I loved every second of it, and I’m so happy to be here and that I made it. It really just means everything to me...I was very happy with my reverse dive. I got very good scores on that, better scores than I have ever got before. I loved that dive…For next year, there are a few things I need to on but one major thing would be a front two-and-a-half and I have the front double.”
Kayhi senior Liam Woodward dove to second place with 420.30 points.
“I am very impressed with my performance,” Woodward said. “I got a 22-point personal best and I’m so pumped up about the first place and third place performances, too…It feels amazing to bring this back home to Ketchikan. We’ve never had a score less than the top five. It feels good to set a personal school record, nobody else has done that. It’s a great feeling.”
Petersburg senior Logan Tow won the 100 free with 46.54 (7. K. Aldrich 48.79), Kodiak senior Cody Hubert the 500 free with 4:40.90, Dimond High School the 200 free relay in 1:27.08; and Dimond senior Clint Kopp the 50 free in 20.58.

The boys’ final event, the 400 free relay, had three Southeast teams place in the top four. Reaching the podium were first place Sitka with 3:12.86 (Tommy McCarthy 47.76, James Nellis 49.84, Zach Martens 48.38, Corin Colliver 46.88), second place Ketchikan with 3:14.48 (Parker Hagan 48.28, Gavin Harold 49.63, J Robbins 48.44, Dash 48.13), third place Colony with 3:15.31) and JDHS fourth with 3:17.50 (K. Aldrich 49.38, Kiessling 48.29, Phelps 50.38, Edwards 49.45).
