The Haines Borough appeared as if it would have a new police officer patrolling the Chilkat Valley, pending a background check.

Caleb Hubbard applied for the police officer position at the end of April and his status as a finalist reported Thursday. But Haines borough deputy clerk Kiersten Rowley said Thursday night that Hubbard withdrew his application for the position.

According to his application, Hubbard attended Juneau Douglas High School in Juneau and currently works for Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium as an environmental technician.

Hubbard previously served two combat tours in Afghanistan, according to his application. He was in the United States Army from 2012 to 2015. After his first three years in the army, Hubbard attended school at the University of Alaska Southeast, where he got a degree in Power Technology.

Degree in hand, Hubbard went back to work for the Army from 2018 to 2025 where he was an infantryman squad leader and decontamination team leader.

Hubbard wrote that while he was in the military, he received various weapons training. After leaving the military in 2025, Hubbard returned to Juneau and worked briefly for the Hecla Mining Company cleaning mining vehicles.

He was let go from this position after three months because, as Hubbard wrote in his application to the borough, he missed the ferry to Admiralty Island.
