Juneau Legion players on the field in 74th All-Star game

Drew Cadigan-McAdoo, Hunter Carte, Madden Mendoza and Micah Nelson help team win

The coaching and playing mastery of Juneau’s Auke Bay Post 25 continued into the Alaska Legion All-Star game Friday night on Anchorage’s Mulcahy Stadium field.

While Auke Bay Post 25 did not earn a spot in the semifinals this week, they put four players on the Denali All-Star team that defeated the Alyeska All-Star team. The players were picked from teams in the two round-robin brackets of the state tournament.

The Denali roster was Auke Bay’s Drew Cadigan-McAdoo (3B/1B/P), Hunter Carte (P/2B/3B), Madden Mendoza (SS/P) and Micah Nelson (2B/SS/P); Palmer Post 15’s Tristan Barrey (OF/P), Wyatt Beal (C), Timothy Bridgman (P/INF) and Cody Otto (1B/OF); West Post 1’s James Damrill (C/P), Kaden Smith (P/2B/3B) and Owen Tierney (SS/P); East Post 34’s Chase Dumas (OF), Dylan Dumas (P/SS) and Yeralvin Ramirez (C/3B); and Kenai Post 20’s Jacob Joanis (3B/P), Daniel Steffensen (OF/P) and Jayden Stuyvesant (P/1B). Coaches were Auke Bay’s Joe Tompkins and Jake Carte, and Palmer’s Ricardo Solis, Ken Carlson and Rob Chriss.

The Alyeska roster was Service Post 28’s Jazz Abad (INF/P), Brayden Cleppe (UTL) and Palmer Dalton (INF/P); Chugiak Post 33’s Caiden Capozzi (2B/OF), Tyson Morgan (P/OF) and Sampson Young (C/INF); South Post 4’s Caleb Bonin (C/OF), Ian Langerman (1B/P) and Jack Zuspan (P/)F); Dimond Post 21’s Jaden Estigo (2B/P), Owen Severson (INF/P) and Casey Stoops (C/P); Wasilla Post 35’s Ramon Guzman (P/SS), Jacob Johnson (OF/P) and Landon Sherrer (3B/OF); and Eagle River’s Brooks Inch (SS/P), Kellen Molloy (P/INF) and Cash Seebold (C/1B). The coaching staff included Service’s Willie Paul, South’s Terry Dannenbring and Wasilla’s Ken Ottinger and Bert Guzman.

Alyeska led 2-0 after the first inning, but Denali coaches Tompkins and Carte pushed their team to score two runs in the bottom of the second and third innings, four runs in the bottom of the fourth and another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to hold on for a 9-5 win. Alyeska added a run in the top of the fifth and two in the top of the seventh before being closed out of the game.

According to Tompkins, Mendoza played shortstop in the game, Hunter Carte played second base and pitched an inning, Nelson played second base and center field, and Cadigan-McAdoo played right field for three innings.

Before the All-Star game, in Wednesday semifinal action, the Denali pool top seed Kenai defeated Alyeska second seed Wasilla 7-3, and Alyeska top seed Service defeated Denali second seed Palmer 5-2 . In Thursday’s championship game, Kenai remained undefeated in the state tournament with a 4-2 win over Service for the legion championship. Kenai advances to the Northwest Regional in Medford, Oregon starting Wednesday, with a chance to represent Alaska in the Legion World Series at Shelby, North Carolina, Aug. 13-18.
