Little League Majors Baseball Tournament begins as Juneau tops POW, Ketchikan bests Stikine

Battle to qualify for state championships continues in Juneau through next Sunday

The opening day of the Alaska District 2 Majors Baseball Tournament featured the exchanging of pins in a sportsmanship gesture at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park on Sunday, followed by the first series of games in round robin pool play.
Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little League opened their tournament with a victory via the 10-run rule in four innings over Prince of Wales. Ketchikan followed with a win via the 10-run rule in four innings over the Petersburg/Wrangell Stikine Grizzlies.
Juneau’s Gavin Ribao was the GCLL winning pitcher, with Colin Daniels and Indie Strong also getting time on the mound. The GCLL batters scored in each of their four innings with Colt Winkleman and Gavin Ludeman scoring the tournament's first runs. Reagon Talatoa, Daniels, Mikhail Venechuk, Strong, Landon Love, Zackary Ritter, Ribao and Ludeman all had multiple hits.
Karl Lingley led POW’s bats while Kayson Gray, Sergeant Stonecipher, Gavin Grant and Gabriel Lingley all earned walks.
In the nightcap game Ketchikan’s Luke Hageman earned the win for the first city all-stars, with Avery Korn also earning time on the bump.

Most of KTN’s damage came from walks as 10 batters went to the plate in the first inning and another nine in the second inning, which included a triple by Ripken Howe. The KTN bats continued through the third and fourth innings. Korn, Xavier Hill, Kobe Nall and Liam Garrison led with multiple hits.
Stikine’s Malachi Harrison struck out the side in the first inning and Braden Fletcher struck out a batter in the second. Jonah Hurst stuck out the side in the third inning before retiring midway through the fourth inning. Jackson Ford, Grady Walker, Kyler Angerman and Jaycee Coil all earned one base.
Monday features two more pool play games with KTN facing POW at 2:30 p.m., and GCLL facing Stikine at 5 p.m.
Tuesday ends pool play with POW vs. Stikine at 2:30 p.m., and GCLL vs. KTN at 5 p.m.
Double-elimination bracket play begins Wednesday with the top seed playing the fourth seed at 2:30 p.m. and the two-seed playing the three-seed at 5 p.m. Bracket play continues through July 20, with the tournament winner qualifying for the state championships in Anchorage July 25-28. The state winner advances to San Bernardino, California to play in the Little League Regional Tournament.
