Juneau’s Gastineau Channel Little League hosts the Alaska District 2 Major Baseball 10- to 12-year-old Tournament beginning Sunday at Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park.

Juneau will be joined by Ketchikan, Prince of Wales and a combined Petersburg/Wrangell team, and is hosting the first Little League championships on the new turf field.

“It means a lot,” GCLL catcher Colt Winkleman said. “Our defense is probably our strength.”

Winkleman said the strength of the catching position is “really just calling the plays out. I am hoping we are going to San Bernardino, California.”

The path to the Little League Regional Tournament in San Bernardino, California on Aug. 2-8 begins with Sunday’s 4:30 p.m. pool play game against Prince of Wales. Ketchikan plays the combined Petersburg/Wrangell team in the 7 p.m. nightcap.

Monday features two more pool play games with KTN facing POW at 2:30 p.m. and GCLL facing PSG/WRG at 5 p.m.

Tuesday ends pool play with POW vs. PSG/WRG at 2:30 p.m., and GCLL vs. KTN at 5 p.m.

Double-elimination bracket play begins Wednesday with the top seed playing the fourth seed at 2:30 p.m. and the second seed playing the third seed at 5 p.m. Bracket play continues through July 20, with the tournament winner qualifying for the state championships in Anchorage July 25-28. The state winner advances to San Bernardino.

“Our power is incredible,” GCLL pitcher Colin Daniels said. “I like our defense and offense. It feels really good to play with all my friends on this field and represent Juneau, really good.”

GCLL players noted a fence would be closer and balls would be flying out of the park.

GCLL power hitter Mitch Host said the secret to hitting is, “You just have to look at the ball. To hit the ball you have to see the ball…Coaches tell us that. We have to focus on that. It means a lot to represent Juneau, first time at the turf field. It feels pretty good.”
