A man accused of assaulting a woman with a handgun who later fled a police officer and reportedly made threats to kill officers was arrested when he surrendered to officials, according to a Juneau Police Department information release.

The arrest of Derek Antrim, 39, occurred after "JPD officers worked with members of Antrim’s family to communicate with him and persuade him to surrender," according to the release.

The initial alleged assault was reported at 10:06 a.m. Sunday, with a report that Antrim’s girlfriend was the victim, JPD reported.

"During the investigation, the woman reported that Antrim retrieved a handgun, struck her several times in the head with it, and forced the barrel of the gun into her mouth," the release notes. "She reported that the assault caused pain, swelling, a facial injury, and damage to one of her teeth. She also told officers that she feared she would be killed during the assault."

On Wednesday morning, JPD officers located Antrim driving a white BMW on Stephen Richards Drive.

"Antrim refused to stop at the direction of an officer and fled the area at a high rate of speed," the release states. "Police later received information from members of Antrim’s family that he was believed to be in possession of an AR-style rifle and had made statements about shooting at police."

Discussions with his family members and Antrim’s surrender occurred later during the day. He was booked at Lemon Creek Correctional Center on two charges of third-degree assault (a class C felony) and one count of fourth-degree assault (a class A misdemeanor).
