This is a developing story.
A man seen carrying multiple knives for hours who barricaded himself in an office building on 3rd Street near the Alaska State Capitol surrendered after a standoff with police lasting about two hours at midday Friday, according to Juneau Police Department Chief Derek Bos.
The man, whose identity was not immediately available, was brought out of the building at 150 3rd Street on a gurney and is being detained on a mental health hold, Bos said.
"Our crisis negotiation team talked him down," he said. "He surrendered his weapons voluntarily."
No injuries to people were reported, but the man did threaten officers, Bos said. People on the other two floors of the building, which houses the Office of Public Advocacy, sheltered in place during the incident.
Police closed 3rd Street between Main Street and Seward Street until the standoff ended.
