This is a developing story.
A man reported missing by his family, who last saw him at Juneau’s Safeway store on May 26, was found dead on Friday in a wooded area at the end of Sherwood Lane, according to the Juneau Police Department.
JPD was notified at about 2 p.m. Friday the body of Dion McCabe, 29, had been located, a press release issued by the department Sunday evening states.
"Officers responded to the scene and confirmed the presence of the deceased individual," the release notes. "The area was secured, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death was initiated.
"The next of kin has been notified. The body will be transported to Anchorage, Alaska, where an autopsy will be conducted to assist investigators in determining the cause and manner of death."
JPD is asking people with information related to this case to contact the department or submit anonymous tips through Juneau Crime Line at JuneauCrimeLine.com.
McCabe was found in the same general area where an abandoned building that was a remnant of Juneau’s dairy farms that originated more than a century ago was destroyed by a fire last Thursday. The JPD press release does not mention that incident and an inquiry to the department early Monday morning did not receive an immediate response. Capital City Fire/Rescue, in statements after the fire, did not mention finding anybody at the scene.
