You know that saying about March going out like a lamb? Bah.
Juneau is expected to get between two and five inches of snow by 4 a.m., according to a winter weather advisory issued Monday by the National Weather Service. That follows a weekend where low-temperature records were set at Juneau International Airport at 12 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday (breaking the old record of 19F in 2014) and 10 degrees on Sunday (old record was 16F in 1963).
As has happened frequently since December, a period of record cold has been followed by a period of significant snow. Whatever accumulation occurs by 11:59 p.m. Tuesday will add to both a new monthly record for March (at 69.5 inches as of 11:59 p.m. Sunday) and a wintertime record since Oct. 1 (set last Monday at 201.2 inches).
"Speaking probabilistically, there is a 20% chance for 5 inches, or greater, of snow in any given area in the Advisory area," a National Weather Service Juneau update on its Facebook page at 10:30 a.m. notes. "Currently, we anticipate more widespread snow Monday evening, with the potential to impact the evening commute for communities with more extensive road systems (enjoy the wintertime walk Elfin Cove)."
The advisory is in effect until 4 a.m. Tuesday. The extended forecast calls for skies clearing Tuesday afternoon, with rain returning Thursday evening, then a chance of rain and/or snow through Sunday.
