Move over, Katmai fat bears; Sitka hosts Fat Pothole Week contest

By Daily Sitka Sentinel staff

Fat Pothole Week is underway.

The city is sponsoring a contest with a local twist on the popular Fat Bear Week, which celebrates the chunkiest brown bears in Alaska’s Katmai National Park.

But instead of bears, potholes will be the focus. Sitkans can submit photos through Friday of the most impressive potholes on city-maintained streets.

Voting will be on the city’s Facebook and Instagram stories (@cbsitka) from noon Tuesday, Sept. 30, through noon Saturday, Oct. 4, with the winner announced on Monday, Oct. 6.

A city streets crew will patch the winning pothole. Submissions must include potholes on city-maintained streets only, with nearby streets or landmarks noted for location, and must show the typical rough, vertical sides that define a pothole, the city says.

Photos are to be emailed to melissa.lunas@cityofsitka.org. For information, call 907 747-1812.
