This story has been updated with additional information.
A deformed joint on the Douglas Bridge was repaired Friday night after numerous complaints by motorists, according to the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities.
"Crews are finishing repairs and expect work to be completed within the hour," a post on DOT’s Facebook page shortly after 9 p.m. states. "Crews will return during daylight hours to conduct a follow-up inspection and ensure no additional work is needed."
An initial notice earlier Friday evening stated an assessment of the surface found that soft rubber had been exposed, but there was no material that poses a risk of puncturing tires despite complaints about such damage posted on local social media sites. The update later that night acknowledged those reports.
"Alaska DOT&PF is aware of reports of potential vehicle damage in the area and appreciates the public’s patience," the update states. "If you believe your vehicle may have been damaged and wish to have the matter reviewed, you may submit a claim through the State of Alaska Department of Administration Risk Management Division. All claims are evaluated individually through their established review process."
A claims administrator can be contacted at (907) 465-2180 or by email at RiskManagement@alaska.gov.
Photos published by DOT show the damage was on the southern lane for vehicles crossing from Douglas Island toward Juneau, and located past the midpoint of the bridge.
