Juneau boys have the numbers and the roster to build a dynasty

Juneau’s Auke Bay Post 25 started the 2026 American Legion Baseball season at the Adair-Kennedy Memorial Park field showing a lot of promise in a four-game sweep of visiting West Post 1.

“The team is just ready to play,” Auke Bay Post 25 head coach Joe Tompkins said. “We have a lot of guys, a 17-man roster right now. I don’t think we have ever carried that big of a roster. A couple kids signed up late and they want to play. One player signed up after the first game and said ‘I want to play.’ So, that is nice. But we have to find ways to get all of them on the field.”

Wins help and the Juneau boys did that this past series.

Juneau started with a Friday pitching, fielding, hitting and running performance that produced an 11-1, run-rule, walk-off win in five innings.

“Our roster numbers will help as we work towards the tournaments,” Tompkins said. “But it also helps to build the program for the next few years with guys coming in and wanting to play more.”

Auke Bay threw six different pitchers in the four-game series and never returned the same hurler to the mound.

Cayman Huff won Friday’s 11-1 game (5 Innings Pitched, 5 Hits, 1 Run, 4 Bases on Balls, 3 Strikeouts). Madden Mendoza went 2-2 at the plate with four runs batted in, three runs scored and walked twice. Plate appearances included Noah Lewis (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB), Hunter Carte (2 H, 2 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Nate Fick (2 H, 3 RBI), Marcus Mendoza (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB), Drew Cadigan-McAdoo (1 H, 1 R, 1 RBI), Riley Fick (1 BB), Jacob Katasse (1 R, 1 BB) and Keaton Belcourt (1 R, 1 BB).

Carte (5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 SO) and Cadigan-McAdoo (2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 SO) shared the mound in Saturday’s 4-2 win to open a doubleheader. Going to the plate were N. Fick (2 H), Carte (1H, 1 R, 1 BB), Parker Katasse (I H, 2 RBI), Lewis (2 BB, 1RBI), R. Fick (1 R, 1 BB), J. Katasse (1 R, 1 BB), Cadigan-McAdoo (1 R), Marcus Mendoza (1 BB), Isaac Kirsch (1 BB), and Brenner Harralston (1 BB).

Marcus Mendoza pitched a shutout in the 11-0 Saturday night cap (7 IP, 6 H, 1 BB, 3 SO). Lewis went 2-3 (3 R, 1 BB), Madden Mendoza 1-2 (2 RBI, 1 R, 3 BB), Marcus Mendoza 1-3 (1 RBI, 1 BB), N. Fick 1-5 (1 RBI), Cadigan-McAdoo 1-3 (1 R, 1 BB), R. Fick 1-2 (1 R), J. Katasse 1-2 (1 RBI), Carte (3 R, 2 BB), Harralston (1 R, 1 BB), P. Katasse (1 R), Belcourt (1 BB), Ayden Bergmann (1 BB), and Bode Winkelmann and Zev LeVine had plate appearances.

Silas Dominguez-Keeler (4 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 SO) and Isaac Kirsch (3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 SO) shared Sunday’s 7-5 win. Madden Mendoza, Marcus Mendoza, Lewis, R. Fick and Harralston had one hit each; Lewis had two RBI, Carte and Harralston one apiece; Carte, Lewis, Madden Mendoza, Marcus Mendoza, R. Fick, J. Katasse and Harralston scored one run each; Carte earned two walks, Winkleman, Marcus Mendoza and Madden Mendoza one each.

“The way the players work together has been impressive,” Tompkins said. “The verbal communication. I like how they are all talking out loud and stuff like that. And they are having fun. They are enjoying themselves.”

Carte has five stolen bases on the season, Lewis four, Winkleman, Harralston, J. Katasse and N. Fick one each.

Cadigan-McAdoo and J. Katasse have each been hit by two pitches, Madden Mendoza, Marcus Mendoza, N. Fick, Winkleman, LeVine and Belcourt have been struck one time each.

Juneau will host Chugiak Post 33 in double header action on Saturday (4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.) and Sunday (1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.).
