Sitka brought out the big guns on Saturday to stop the Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears from winning a third weekend game in a row on the Wolves’ Moller Field.

Sitka senior pitcher Caleb Calhoun, a pre-season Gatorade Alaska Baseball Player of the Year candidate, was looking to treat this start on the mound just as he finished it in consecutive no-hitters last season in the state tournament.

JDHS would have other plans, but first they had to deal with Calhoun.

Calhoun went six innings, allowed three hits and one run, walked three batters and struck out 14. The lone run came in the top of the sixth inning as JDHS sophomore Micah Nelson earned a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a ground out by sophomore Charlie Begenyi. JDHS senior Nate Fick hit a long fly ball out to Sitka center fielder Josh Partido that allowed Nelson to tag up and score. Calhoun gave up a single and then struck out a batter to retire the inning.

Sitka would not score in the bottom half. Calhoun moved to a defensive position in center field, while Fisher Steinson and Brian Campbell came to the bump in relief.

JDHS freshman Bode Winkleman singled to start the top of the seventh inning and advanced to second base off a one-out single by senior Riley Fick. Senior Chris Andersen earned a walk to load the bases. JDHS’ Nelson faced Sitka’s Campbell and ground into a fielder’s choice scoring Winkleman to trail 4-2 and R. Fick scored on an error at second base. Senior Nate Fick ground into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

JDHS senior Cayman Huff started the game on the mound and went 3.1 innings, allowed eighth hits and four runs. Begenyi went 2.2 innings, allowed one hit, walked two batters and struck out one.

After Calhoun left the mound Sitka’s Steinson went 0.1 inning, allowed two hits and two runs and walked one batter. Campbell went 0.2 innings and walked one batter.

JDHS’ Nelson and N. Fick had one RBI apiece. Senior Madden Mendoza had two hits, Nelson, Winkleman and R. Fick one each. Nelson, Winkleman and R. Fick score a single run apiece.

Sitka’s Brett Ross, Olen Weathers and Josh Partido had two hits apiece. Weathers, Nolan Calhoun and Chase Haskins had one RBI apiece. Jude Gluth, Ross and Weathers scored a run apiece for the Wolves.

According to the JDHS school calendar the Crimson Bears play a 5:15 p.m. game Wednesday at Eagle River, a 5:15 p.m. game Thursday at South Anchorage and a 6:30 p.m. game Friday at Wasilla.
