The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears girls soccer team knew South Anchorage was the top-ranked team in the state. On Friday the Crimson Bears saw firsthand why the ranking is deserved in a 5-0 loss to the Wolverines.

JDHS is ranked second in the state and both teams are favorites to meet up during the state tournament May 28-30, hosted by Colony, Palmer and Wasilla high schools.

“We need to keep our heads high,” JDHS senior Peyton Wheeler said. “That team is incredible. They play a different level of soccer than what you will see in high school. With the results we got today I think we have nothing to be ashamed of. We adjusted very well in the second half, and if we play like that tomorrow, we will have a good chance of stopping them from scoring along with creating more opportunities for ourselves.”

South struck early, scoring within the first 10 minutes and led 3-0 at the half, dominating possession and playing faster than any opponent JDHS has faced this season.

“We just played a team that has scored 179 goals thus far and averaged 13 per game before playing tonight.,” JDHS Coach Matt Dusenberry said. “They find the net and find the net on the regular.”

South senior Brianna Bailey led the Wolverines with one goal and two assists in the match.

South senior co-captain Addison Bailey, senior Kinsey Dufour, junior Jesenia Cortes and senior Ali Boshell had one goal each. Junior Shayla Lee and senior Dara Stull one assist apiece.

“Hearing that Juneau was the second seed, we knew immediately they would give us a competitive game and they did,” Addison Bailey said.

South co-captain Addysen Gasser said, “We have definitely prioritized taking nothing lightly and playing our game no matter the competition.”

Added co-captain Naomi Njoku, “Going into state we are excited to finish out the season developing our team chemistry as well as staying healthy.”

South senior Kadence Rogers earned the shutout in goal.

South is now 16-0 overall and 14-0 in the Cook Inlet Conference. They have outscored opponents 179 to three.

JDHS is 11-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Railbelt Conference.

South had five corners in the game and JDHS two.

JDHS’ Wheeler, senior Kenzie Simonson, juniors Kate Bovitz and Riley Schultz, and sophomores Nellie Stowers, Ayla Erickson and Marigold Lindoff, and freshman Maddie Dale played 80 minutes each. Freshman Hailey Romero played 57 minutes, freshman Mia Alexander 36, junior Clairee Overson 28, sophomore Gracie Snyder 26, and senior Piper Blackgoat Diehl 23.

According to JDHS stats Dale had the lone Crimson Bears shot. Senior keeper Tearamae Alexander saved five shots in the loss.

The two sides meet again Saturday at 11 a.m., followed by the JDHS and South boys playing at 1 p.m.
