OK, seriously, this stopped being funny about four headlines ago.
Another sudden change in the weather has Juneau on the precipice of the all-time winter snowfall record, with a "special weather statement" issued Monday afternoon calling for one to three inches of accumulation by tonight. That comes after snow during the morning unofficially put Juneau International Airport about an inch away from an all-time high that was revised upwards on Sunday.
The official snowfall accumulation as of 11:59 p.m. Sunday was 195.8 inches, shy of the 197.9"-inch record from 2006-07 — which includes 7.5 inches a longtime forecaster working that winter insisted was missing from records until they were updated Sunday.
Brian Bezenek, a National Weather Service Juneau meteorologist, said Monday afternoon that while there’s no official update on the gap after the morning’s snowfall, "unofficially we're like an inch away." The original forecast for late Monday called for light snow until the updated advisory was issued at about 3 p.m.
"A band of snow showers is lifting north into the Juneau area this afternoon," the advisory notes. "Snow showers could reduce visibility down to half mile or less. Snow amounts will vary, but generally expecting 1 to 3 inches through the evening, with locally higher amounts possible."
Bezenek said the advisory was put out as yet another warning for afternoon and evening commuters to be cautious.
"I think we're all tired of snow," he added.
