Forget the lion cliché. March in Juneau has come in like an abominable snowman.
Yet another winter storm expected to leave up to 10 inches of accumulation by early Monday afternoon means more than two feet of snow has now fallen on the capital city during the first eight days of the month, according to the National Weather Service Juneau. The 24.3 inches recorded at Juneau International Airport as of 11:59 p.m. Sunday compares to a historical average of 4.2 inches at this time of the month.
A winter storm warning in effect until 1 p.m. Monday is expected to add two to four more inches to that total, according to a weather service forecast updated at about 6 a.m.
"Bands of snow showers will continue to move west to east across southeast Alaska Monday morning," the updated forecast notes. "These snow showers may be moderate to heavy at times, resulting in variable snow amounts across the region. Under the heaviest snow showers, expect visibilities to be reduced to one mile or less with isolated areas seeing upwards of 2 to 6 inches of snowfall through Monday morning. A band of heavy snowfall set up overnight in parts of Juneau and Douglas."
School buses and Capital Transit are operating on winter routes Monday.
Snow showers are forecast to continue through tonight, but the extended forecast through Saturday mostly calls for cloudy to partly sunny skies.
