Juneau’s Recycling Center, hit with disruptions since record snowstorms in December, is scheduled to resume normal hours and operations on Tuesday, according to a City and Borough of Juneau announcement.
"After a temporary shutdown to address major equipment repairs and material build-up, the Juneau Recycling Center returns to full service and operations on Tuesday, March 17," the announcement states. "All recyclable materials – cardboard, mixed paper, glass, aluminum, and plastic – can be dropped off on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents can visit juneaurecycling.com to learn more about the Recycling Center and its services."
The center in Lemon Creek was closed, along with other CBJ facilities, during the holidays in late December when record storms were occurring. The closures at the center continued until the facility reopened Jan. 17, but then saw further closures and limited operating hours due to ongoing mechanical issues.
A notice issued by CBJ on Feb. 19 noted the closures beginning in January occurred "when the baler, essential equipment used to clear recycling material, was damaged during the extreme cold." Operations resumed the next day on a limited basis at the center, with a "hope to minimize build-up of materials so recent repairs are not overwhelmed."
On March 2 the recycling center resumed regular hours for cardboard, mixed paper and glass. But it delayed accepting plastic for a week and stated "aluminum drop-off will be available as soon as containers are delivered and installed after the snow."
