Capital City Fire/Rescue responded to a structure fire on Grant Street on Tuesday at approximately 2 a.m.
There were no reported injuries, according to CCFR. The home sustained an estimated $150,000 in damages.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental through an investigation by Fire Marshal Theresa Ross. She said the area of origin was behind the washer and dryer at the level of the electric baseboard heater, which the homeowner had turned on earlier that evening for the first time this season.
Ross said the fire service generally sees more fires during winter months due to an increased use of fireplaces, wood stoves and space heaters.
She shared these general winter fire safety guidelines:
Use flameless candles when possible. If using real candles, keep them away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended.
Inspect holiday lights for frayed wires or broken bulbs before use.
Don’t overload electrical outlets or power strips. Turn off all lights and decorations before going to bed or leaving the house. Avoid running cords under rugs or furniture. Use only UL-listed electrical products (should be clearly marked on the product).
Keep chimneys clean and inspected annually if using a fireplace or wood stove. Dispose of ashes properly in a metal container, away from the house.
Clear snow and ice from around fire hydrants and emergency exits.
As for year-round fire safety, Ross recommended Juneau residents should test smoke alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year. She said to install carbon monoxide detectors, especially near sleeping areas. She said to have a fire extinguisher accessible and know how to use it (PASS: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep). Lastly, Ross suggested creating and practicing a fire escape plan with all household members.
