Workers are taking on a list of repairs to the Skagway ferry terminal under an emergency contract, but it’s not known yet if the facility will be open in time for events such as next month’s Klondike Road Relay, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities announced Wednesday.

The Alaska Marine Highway System dock was closed a week ago when cracks were observed in the concrete abutment supporting the vehicle transfer bridge and passenger walkway. Subsequent underwater inspections discovered further damage needing repair.

"The repair plan calls for replacing six anchor chains, stabilizing the terminal float, and repairing the damaged concrete abutment," a DOT press release states. "Crews are also preparing to remove the vehicle transfer bridge and passenger walkway. Their removal will provide the access needed to complete repairs to both the float and the landside abutment."

A reopening date is not known, according to DOT.

"The department recognizes the importance of upcoming community events, including the Klondike Road Relay scheduled for September 11," the release notes. "DOT&PF is advancing the work with these important community needs in mind. If the terminal closure affects the event, DOT&PF and AMHS will work closely with event organizers and the Municipality of Skagway to help address transportation needs."

The Skagway ferry office is still open to assist passengers. For people driving between Skagway to Haines via Canada "AMHS is allowing additional time in Haines where operationally feasible to help accommodate the longer driving connection," according to DOT.

State officials are also coordinating with private passenger ferry operators that are providing supplemental passenger service.
