For local college students spending their spring break chilling here rather than, say, on a beach in Athens, Greece, they’re certainly getting full value.

Juneau set a cold-temperature record on Friday with a low of zero degrees Fahrenheit, breaking the old record of 7°F from 1955, 2006 and 2023, according to the National Weather Service Juneau. Warmer temperatures arrived Saturday, but with them is a forecast calling for a week of snow, including eight to 14 inches between Sunday night and Monday afternoon.

"Tonight we could see an inch or two and then it really comes in hard Sunday night," Andrew Park, a NWS Juneau meteorologist, said Saturday.

More snow showers are expected Tuesday through at least Friday, according to the extended forecast.

Juneau has already set numerous snowfall and cold-temperature records this winter, including a record 82 inches of snow during December and four low-temperature records in a five-day period that month. More recently, Juneau set snowfall records on Feb. 28 and March 3 and is now less than 30 inches away from setting an all-time cumulative winter record.

A total of 164.9 inches of snow has fallen at Juneau’s airport since Oct. 1 as of midnight Friday, making it the seventh-highest total in recorded history, according to the weather service. The record of 194.3 inches was set in 1964-65.

"Everyone's got to not get complacent," Park said "It’s a hard winter and we’ll be out of it soon — hopefully."
